Focus on the Family Super Bowl ad

And email I received from Care2.  I will boycott the Super Bowl should they show Focus on the Family's ad.  I'm very disappointed in CBS.

In the past, CBS has denied other organizations, like MoveOn.org and United Church of Christ, the chance to get their word out during the Superbowl because the network considered their messages to be too controversial. But it seems its definition of "controversial" has changed. CBS approved an ad by the ultra-conservative group Focus on the Family, attacking a woman's right to choose.

Demand that CBS pull this controversial and disrespectful ad from the Superbowl line-up >>

The Superbowl is the most-watched television program in the country -- a prime opportunity for anti-choice groups to broadcast their idea that a woman doesn't have the right to make decisions about her own body. What's worse is CBS has no plans to run a pro-choice ad to balance both sides of the issue.

CBS's decision to run the anti-choice ad is biased, unfair and unethical. Tell CBS to cancel the Superbowl ad from Focus on the Family >>

Thanks for taking action!

I could be mistaken, but I believe that the 2009 Super Bowl was aired on NBC, not CBS. And I do seem to remember there being some controversy over their denying ad time to groups that they considered to be to controversial. If that is the case, I don't see why CBS should be held to the same decisions that NBC made. And frankly, if they have denied such ads in the past, are they then unable to change their policy? The only way I would see there being a problem is if they accepted one controversial ad but refused to sell air time for an opposing ad or charged a higher rate for it. I'm also a bit confused about all the controversy as from what I can find, the text of the ad has not been released, just the general premise. That this young man's mother was faced with advise from doctors to abort and she choose not to do so. We have no way of knowing at this time if the ad mentions trying to limit or do away with a woman's right to choose, or if it just celebrates the choice that was made in this case. Of course I have no doubt that FoF hopes that the ad will encourage people to work for the restriction of abortion. But if that end is not mentioned, and honestly I can't think of any pro-life ads that do, it ends up just being an ad that celebrates one of the choices that women have.

Well said. "Too controversial" is in the eye of the beholder. And the decision is in the pocketbook of the beholder.

I couldn't agree with you more. This organization has paid for an ad. The television stations are running a business. What difference does it make if you don't like what they're "selling"? Personally, i don't drink BudLight, one of the major sponsors. Should i boycott because they're advertising something i dislike?? Please. What about the game itself? That's pretty violent. Maybe we should boycott that as well.

I'm sure it isn't a matter of "allowing" both sides. Perhaps Pro Choice movements have chosen not to spend a kabilliion dollars on advertising during the Super Bowl. .

Maybe some one should make a commercial to follow that one, about people watching the Super Bowl on their big screen TV, sipping a cold one, eating pizza, talking about their new shinny truck. Then have the announcer ask "Have you paid your child support lately?"

Excellent idea!

We shouldn't be able to choose a legal, medical procedure, but we sure should be able to choose to be meat for the guys, huh?>

Hmmmm.....wonder if they'll bring back the commercial with Paris Hilton nearly naked, sopping wet, doing a Wendy's commercial (I think)?

You make some valid points. I agree. All I want to watch is the game.

"But they'll still be showing the beer and fast food commercials with scantily clad women as well, right?

We shouldn't be able to choose a legal, medical procedure, but we sure should be able to choose to be meat for the guys, huh?"

Exactly! It's okay for ads about Cialis and Viagra, (try explaining that one to the kids...), women as sex objects, drinking being cool? Covers everything that leads to this ad about "choose life."
