Focus on the Family Super Bowl ad
| Mon, 01-25-2010 - 1:33pm |
And email I received from Care2. I will boycott the Super Bowl should they show Focus on the Family's ad. I'm very disappointed in CBS.
In the past, CBS has denied other organizations, like MoveOn.org and United Church of Christ, the chance to get their word out during the Superbowl because the network considered their messages to be too controversial. But it seems its definition of "controversial" has changed. CBS approved an ad by the ultra-conservative group Focus on the Family, attacking a woman's right to choose.

Demand that CBS pull this controversial and disrespectful ad from the Superbowl line-up >>
The Superbowl is the most-watched television program in the country -- a prime opportunity for anti-choice groups to broadcast their idea that a woman doesn't have the right to make decisions about her own body. What's worse is CBS has no plans to run a pro-choice ad to balance both sides of the issue.
CBS's decision to run the anti-choice ad is biased, unfair and unethical. Tell CBS to cancel the Superbowl ad from Focus on the Family >>

I saw the JJ thing with Timberlake......it was nuthin'.......I mean really, whether it was staged or an accident, I saw nothing that truly would have even offended a young child.
I've seen much worse than that on TV.....
I have never been a huge Tebow fan either......having the Psalms under his eyes is a bit much for my taste. I'm not an overly religious person anyway, but even if i was, I wouldn't be caught dead looking as if I'm a poster child for God. Spare me, please.

Granted, I have not seen the ad, but from what I've heard and read it is a low key ad with
Thanks for that.
I personally think it's a pretty stupid thing to air during a football game of all things.
I believe that I was pretty clear that they should allow both sides. As to what they have denied in the past, did they do that at the same time as allowing an ad by FoF or similar organization? If not, and if they are not now denying an ad by UCC or a pro-choice group, I just don't see what the problem is. The time frame involved, does make a difference in the your argument. If on the other hand, they have or are now accepting and running pro-life ads at the same time as refusing pro-choice ads, I would agree that that is a problem.
*** why do we need some 'testimonial' from an NCAA QB & his mother? The Super Bowl is not the time nor the place for such an ad. And I can assure you that FoF does NOT celebrate ANY 'choice' other than carrying a baby to term. In their own words, the only time they accept the 'choice' of abortion is when a mother's life is in danger....NOT rape, NOT incest, NOT if the mother's HEALTH is in danger.***
Why do we "need" any commercials? And why isn't the Super Bowl the time or place for such an ad? What would be the correct time or place for the ad? And I know exactly what FoF's attitude toward abortion is, and I made that clear in my previous post. I know that their primary intent is to advance their pro-life agenda, why else would they be paying for any ad. But the content of the commercial does make a difference, is it a call to political action or is it simply this woman's story? We don't know and until we see the ad or they release the text, we won't know. So for now, it seems that people are more upset about who is paying for the ad than the ad itself and judging current policy against past policy. So again I come back to the question, in the past when denying ads by UCC or other groups as to controversial, were the denials on both sides of the issue or were they denying one but airing the other? And currently, they have accepted this ad by FOF so are they currently denying ad time to pro-choice or other organizations as being to controversial? Does content of the ad itself play into the decision or is it based solely on subject matter and/group buying the ad time?
Just a thought, but why would time be a factor in running an ad during the Super Bowl by a pro-choice group? Unless of course all the time is sold, but my ds had some sports show on last night talking about it and they said then that there was space still available. Wouldn't they have their own publicity people with some kind of ad program? I mean it is not like it would have to be a direct answer to this specific ad, just a pro-choice ad. Now if that were denied or charged a higher rate, I would say we have an issue.

I think it's perfect ad placement. Think about the ads already airing and the sequence of events:
Pizza
Beer
Viagra
KY
Busty scantily clad women
Abortion
It kinda makes sense ;o)

Not so sure why that makes sense. What it does show is how shallow some men can be. What the ad should REALLY have is men treating women with respect and keeping their pants zipped in order to prevent a pregnancy.
LOL! Obviously, you and Ohearto don't have
Oh, just my lame attempt at sarcastic humour.
I agree with you, Shannon.fannon, it would be much nicer if the ads were to be based on respect and taking responsibility. Then we wouldn't be having a discussion on how inappropriate an abortion ad is.
LOL. No, I have a small TV. I guess I just wasn't paying attention. Or I'm so used to seeing that part of the body, it just didn't even phase me. One time I was walking into a grocery store and a guy flashed me. It took about 5 minutes for it to register what he had done. The idiot was still standing there when the cops showed up.
My DD would scream in fear every time the Kool-ade guy came on TV.

I can definitely agree with that!
