Focus on the Family Super Bowl ad
| Mon, 01-25-2010 - 1:33pm |
And email I received from Care2. I will boycott the Super Bowl should they show Focus on the Family's ad. I'm very disappointed in CBS.
In the past, CBS has denied other organizations, like MoveOn.org and United Church of Christ, the chance to get their word out during the Superbowl because the network considered their messages to be too controversial. But it seems its definition of "controversial" has changed. CBS approved an ad by the ultra-conservative group Focus on the Family, attacking a woman's right to choose.
Thanks for taking action!

Demand that CBS pull this controversial and disrespectful ad from the Superbowl line-up >>
The Superbowl is the most-watched television program in the country -- a prime opportunity for anti-choice groups to broadcast their idea that a woman doesn't have the right to make decisions about her own body. What's worse is CBS has no plans to run a pro-choice ad to balance both sides of the issue.
CBS's decision to run the anti-choice ad is biased, unfair and unethical. Tell CBS to cancel the Superbowl ad from Focus on the Family >>

Hi, and welcome to the board :)
~Or would it then be okay since... says something... world~
Read ahead: "I think what too many are missing is that CBS has denied ads to those with an opposing POV in the past. It has labeled the ad/topic 'too controversial'. If the situation was reversed, as much as I detest FoF, I would feel the same way." (post 16586.72)
~You are here because someone "chose" to "let" you live.~
It's possible that legal, reliable contraception and legal abortion weren't available at the time of her conception/birth (see my post below). They weren't at mine. Some of us may be old enough to be your mom.
eta - Is there anything of which you'd object to seeing aired during the Superbowl? Would you be a-okay about a network turning down ads with a conservative viewpoint while accepting liberal ones?

No, not necessarily, unless you mean "someone" who didn't chose *illegally to do otherwise?
Contraception was not decriminalized in my country until 1969, and most abortion until 1988.
In yours, reliable contraception (ie. the Pill) wasn't available in all states for married women until 1965, and for single women until 1972. Abortion was legally restricted to cases involving rape, etc., until I think 1973.

Good morning...yawn.
I get your point......and I have thoughts both ways on abortion.....no matter how I may try to go hard one way or the other, I always come back to the fence. Maybe because I'm not a woman? Could be. I just feel we all should have a choice, either way. Does that make any sense? Probably not.
I need some coffee......I would have preferred remaining in bed on a blustery morning like it is here....brrrr.

Thanks for posting a reality check for the younger posters that haven't experienced the "good old days". In Britain one could only obtain an abortion if the pregnancy affected the woman's mental health which would include visiting several specialists plus it would cost a great deal of money.
Those seeking an affordable
I'll share this story with you:
It was 1971......my g/f at that time, and my wife of today, became pregnant. We had already broke up before finding out she was carrying our son. Ohio at that time didn't have any abortion clinics, so we checked around and found a place in NYC. Made an appointment for an 8:00 AM Friday morning abortion.....we told no one. Our drive up there was a lonely, extremely guilt-ridden
For the umpteenth time...sigh...my objection to this is because CBS has denied ads from others in the past that it deemed 'too controversial'.

Yeah, that seems to be the implication. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but I'm very pro-choice, yet never considered having an abortion, so much so that I refused amniocentesis both times because no matter what I wasn't having an abortion.
