If you look, the film critics loved the movie and praised it.
The hard news people that actually follow the news and politics tore it to shreds.

Patriotism means to stand by the Country. It does not mean to stand by the President. -- Theodore Roosevelt.
It was a great documentary, in that the cameras were right there as this incredible, tragic event unfolded. It's truly a "document" in that respect. And of course it's not as controversial as Farenheit 9/11, and it wasn't intended to be. But just to show you that even a basic documentary such as "9/11" has to shape the reality it shows, in this case based on what footage was available to them, consider some of the issues that dont' come across at all in this completely accurate film - the issue of the first responders radios malfunctioning isn't dealt with...the issue of competetion between the NYPD and the NYFD I don't think was dealt with...and the film overall exists so much in the moment that there is no context. It's a completely apolitical film about the tragedy of the day and about the great heroism shown that day. But can you imagine what a different film it would be if the first shot was of the August 6th PDB headline "Bin Laden Determined to Hijack US Planes"? I know...I know... it wasn't that kind of movie, but my point is that "truth" just doesn't hit the film and get projected onto the screen. All documentaries are shaped in some way. although I'll grant you some are shaped more than others.
Just my thoughts on documentary, now that everyone seems to be a film purist all of a sudden.
