A lot of Christians are conservative, and conservatism, as a political philosophy, acknowledges the existence of God, but it is not based on religion. How's that for nuance? ;-)
Primarily, it is

"Conservatism encompasses the accumulation of experience and wisdom over many generations, enlightened and guided by Divine Revelation.
GOD. The cosmos is the creation of an infinite God, who has a unique purpose for each individual human being. Hence, human beings are essentially equal, and each life is of infinite value. Human beings have been uniquely chosen to bear the "image" of God, and to act as God's stewards over the earth and its many forms of life.
Therefore, conservatives reject the following philosophies, each of which is part of the intellectual foundations of the consensus of today's academic, media and political elite:
Atheism
ORIGINAL SIN. Human beings have an innate proclivity to rebel against God and the created limitations of human nature.
Individual human beings receive from God individual callings or vocations
Conservatives oppose (2) the recognition of so-called "homosexual marriage" or other deviations from monogamy, (3) divorce on demand,"
Are the Republicans a political party or a Catholic church?? I assume, based on this article, that you have no atheists, Buddhists etc within your party? I'm an agnostic myself, and while I have great respect for personal faith, I happen to view organised religion as one of the most perfidious and dangerous ideas ever invented by the human race, leading to more pain and suffering than anything else I can think of. It has led, for instance, to the Crusades, 9/11, the Holocaust and various wars around the globe, not to mention the Irish strife in my own back garden. That a major Western political system should so base itself in religion is a great worry. Tony Blair is famously Christian, but he was elected in spite of that, not because of it.
Do you genuinely view homosexuality as deviant? I'm straight, but I have some understanding of the genetic and environmental causes of homosexuality, and I can see no logical reason why two people in love may not be allowed to marry. And if a woman is married to an abusive or unfaithful man, why shouldn't she be free to seek a divorce?
I'm sure I'll get a lot of flak for this, but I would just say that I came to this thread with an open mind and very little knowledge of Republicanism. And while there are many admirable things about it, it's overt religiosity appals me. Does anyone have a similar link about Democrats?
Suemox, please look at link mentioned in post 103 and give me your views as a non-American
