"I think Iraq is the most serious and imminent threat to our country."--John Edwards, "CNN Late Edition," Feb. 24, 2002

He is the person who called Iraq an "imminent" threat. Not Bush

So why are you laying the blame for the intelligence failure and the timing of the vote at the president's feet?

The various agencies are responsible for the intelligence and numerous investigations have now said that it wasn't manipulated by the administration, and the Democrat Leadership was responsible the timing of the vote.

Because both were a result of President Bush's great haste in pressing for war. Time wasn't on his side and so he played on the fears of the public that there would be another attack. He played on the fears of Congress to be seen as "soft on terror" and won. (It's no coincidence that Daschle agreed to the early vote the week of the 9/11 anniversary. And believe, me, I blame the Democratic leadership for rolling on this too.) In the rush to get the vote on, the intelligence community suddenly had to throw the most critical National Intelligence Estimate written in decades together in a few weeks, so that it could be delivered to people who had no time to read or evaluate it, so that they could give war powers to an administration that wasn't waiting for the formality - they had already spent $700 million on the proposed war by sneaking the money away from the Afghanistan funds. (see Woodward's book)

And all the while Bush and Cheney are on TV talking about mushroom clouds and NBC weapons, making claims with great certainty, months before the NIE was even completed. And now we learn that the publicly released version was changed to remove almost any trace of doubt or uncertainty about important claims. Apparently the part that's classified is that the Intelligence community wasn't entirely sure about Iraq's WMD.

" In a classified National Intelligence Estimate prepared before the Iraq war, the CIA hedged its judgments about Saddam Hussein and weapons of mass destruction, pointing up the limits of its knowledge.

But in the unclassified version of the NIE — the so-called white paper cited by the Bush administration in making its case for war — those carefully qualified conclusions were turned into blunt assertions of fact, according to the Senate Intelligence Committee's report on prewar intelligence.

The repeated elimination of qualifying language and dissenting assessments of some of the government's most knowledgeable experts gave the public an inaccurate impression of what the U.S. intelligence community believed about the threat Hussein posed to the United States, the committee said."

Hey Metrochick,

Why don't you start a new thread "Edward/Kerry not Lying" about war on Iraq and paste the same info. I think it is getting hidden in these post and people should know what exactly happened before Senate approved the war. just IMO.

Everyone knew Iraq was a threat!! Kerry and Edwards just don't know how to keep their mouth shuts and then have to cover their butts later. Sorry. I don't want Kerry as President. My opinion.
