Kerry's Lying

John Kerry:

"We've got more African Americans in jail than we do in college. That's unacceptable," he added.
In fact, it seems that there are more than twice as many African Americans in college than in jail.

U.S. Census Bureau (2000): African Americans in college: 2,224,181

U.S. DoJ Office of Justice Programs: "Prison and Jail Inmates at MidYear 2003" (p.11): "Table 13. Number of inmates in state or federal prisons or local jails" -- Black Americans in jail: 899,200.

Those nearly 900,000 incarcerated African Americans still represent a tragic waste of lives and potential. But fortunately, things are not nearly as gloomy as John Kerry wants to believe they are.

It's possible that Kerry is basing his claims on other data, but it would be interesting to learn what his sources are.

UPDATE: As a commenter notes below, this Kerry howler was already debunked a month ago. But then why is Kerry still making the same claim today? What kind of an echo chamber is his campaign that none of the staff read Kerry's sharpest critics? Not a good sign for those who look to Kerry to improve intelligence capabilities or cure government agencies of their dysfunctional groupthink culture.

I totally agree. I listen to Rush on a regular basis and have never considered him racist in the least. Like you said, it was over 30 yrs. ago and he regrets ever having made that remark. Byrd...well...the man needs to retire for his benefit & ours.

I felt the need to check whether true or not. I listen to Rush often. I usually like listening to him, but needed to know. It came as a total surprise to me. I thought it wouldn't be true. He should not have made the remark (30+ yrs ago) & DOES regret it. I'm unaware of him continuing this pattern. One may disagree with his views on politics, but he is not a card carrying member of the KKK.

Rush Limbaugh, (what little I have been able to tolerate of him) has for as long as I can remember, been whining about how white men get the short end of the stick, how their way of life is threatend due to unfairness and excessive allowances to minorities and women. according to me, that is racism, and sexism and it is incorrect. Comments made by Rush in the past, about football Q-backs, being given the allowance to do whatever because they are black are ignorant and racist, though many argue they are directed at the media, they are racist, eihter way, becuse there are many white athletes who get the same, but in HIS mind, white guys just don't get a break.

but I don't want to talk about Rush any more, you can try all you want to convince me that he is not a racist, and that I am wrong, it won't happen. The very first time I ever saw him (his show in the 90"s where he called everyone dittoheads) I knew he was a sexist racist bigot, due to the junk oozing from his mouth, though I don't remember his exact words then, It was, and is enough for me I don't often judge like that but when I do, I am right. I will never change my mind. so don't even try. As far as the hood thing, I don't suppose he is in the clan, but I suppose he would like to be if they made a hood big enough for his fat freak head.

But wait, he (byrd) says he's sorry too... why can Rush be sorry and not Byrd? how can you express the double standard so readily? and Rush did too make a comment in 2003 about black footbal players being given more leniency by the press than whites.

And for your information, I would never have supported Byrd, though he is a democrat. I would never support ANY public figure who had a history of racism. I believe all people deserve forgiveness, and that they can change, but I do not think they belong in the public eye after we know they are a racist, or were one, it is simply unacceptable.

That's odd; I don't recall Rush ever mentioning that white men's 'way of life' is threatened. If you are referring to affirmative action, I find it unbelievably offensive to suggest that because someone doesn't support it, they are racist or sexist.

IMHO, affirmative action is
