Kerry's Lying

John Kerry:

"We've got more African Americans in jail than we do in college. That's unacceptable," he added.
In fact, it seems that there are more than twice as many African Americans in college than in jail.

U.S. Census Bureau (2000): African Americans in college: 2,224,181

U.S. DoJ Office of Justice Programs: "Prison and Jail Inmates at MidYear 2003" (p.11): "Table 13. Number of inmates in state or federal prisons or local jails" -- Black Americans in jail: 899,200.

Those nearly 900,000 incarcerated African Americans still represent a tragic waste of lives and potential. But fortunately, things are not nearly as gloomy as John Kerry wants to believe they are.

It's possible that Kerry is basing his claims on other data, but it would be interesting to learn what his sources are.

UPDATE: As a commenter notes below, this Kerry howler was already debunked a month ago. But then why is Kerry still making the same claim today? What kind of an echo chamber is his campaign that none of the staff read Kerry's sharpest critics? Not a good sign for those who look to Kerry to improve intelligence capabilities or cure government agencies of their dysfunctional groupthink culture.

I have to call snopes to the carpet on this one. The information is not anecdotal. Rush has commented on this a few times, as with the Eagles quarterback and the Abu “Skull and Bones” comment. His typical form of rebuttal is to play the recording of the call in question and let the listeners decide. He placed the call in context and played it over the air (on 2 different days that I know). I’m afraid I can’t recall the discussion itself, but can say quoting: “Take the bone out of your nose” is way off target. He was making a point and specifically chose a phrase that was inflammatory. Personally, I found his “S.& K.” comments more offensive and less defensible, but that’s just me. I would also be cautious in quoting FAIR since the acronym is an oxymoron.

like I said, I don't care for either of them, so you assume that because he is a democrat I like him? he is one of mine? I have no loyalties to him at all. I might be offended if I were shallow enough to vote based only on party affiliation, but I am not either of the two.

oh, sorry, he merely called his former actions deplorable, and said he is ashamed of them.

I don't know if you did. Maybe I am thinking of somebody else. But I am not goimg to read all the old posts to see, just say I am sorry if I offended you. I guess I just want to distance myself from racist people and I have to do that very agressively in real life (at my job) and I just am very defensive about that... But, If I have to be defensive about somehting, that one is worth it. to me anyway.

Saddam was still too dangerous to leave in power in a post 9/11 world, and the consequences of not acting pre-emptively against terrorists & their supporters is too great.

That's nonesense. How long was it before the war started that The United States had anyone on the ground in Iraq gathering Intelligence on this 'Threat'?

5 years.

So you think it's ok, to rely on ANOTHER country's lame intelligence and send OUR OWN boys and girls to die?

Not one human being from the CIA on the ground in Iraq gathering Intelligence.

So, you don't know and neither did anyone, the level of this so-called threat in Iraq. Hey, millions warned Bush and people like you who follow him that Bush was wrong before the war started, but you people wouldn't have it.

Well, you reap what you sew. Iraq has hung Bush and he'll gone in November.

Hasn't anyone else noticed that everything was fine and hunky dory for Bush before Iraq and now it's all gone to the crapper for his Administration.
