"We've got more African Americans in jail than we do in college. That's unacceptable," he added. In fact, it seems that there are more than twice as many African Americans in college than in jail.
U.S. Census Bureau (2000): African Americans in college: 2,224,181
U.S. DoJ Office of Justice Programs: "Prison and Jail Inmates at MidYear 2003" (p.11): "Table 13. Number of inmates in state or federal prisons or local jails" -- Black Americans in jail: 899,200.
Those nearly 900,000 incarcerated African Americans still represent a tragic waste of lives and potential. But fortunately, things are not nearly as gloomy as John Kerry wants to believe they are.
It's possible that Kerry is basing his claims on other data, but it would be interesting to learn what his sources are.
UPDATE: As a commenter notes below, this Kerry howler was already debunked a month ago. But then why is Kerry still making the same claim today? What kind of an echo chamber is his campaign that none of the staff read Kerry's sharpest critics? Not a good sign for those who look to Kerry to improve intelligence capabilities or cure government agencies of their dysfunctional groupthink culture.

Now, if the reverse were true, and say, Rush were black, and McNabb white, and he said those same comments..... I bet nothing would have been said about it.
Personally, I dont know if McNabb is overrated or not, as I dont follow football, or the Eagles closely enough to know. I have heard many people say that he is very overrated, but I dont know.
<<I agree with you, but it was still pretty foolish of Rush to say something like this, and not think that people were going to come down on him for it. >>

Since Sept of 2003, here are the new jobs figures by month:
Sept: 67,000
Oct: 88,000
Nov: 83,000
Dec: 8,000
Jan: 159,000
Feb: 83,000
Mar: 353,000
Apr: 324,000
May: 235,000
Jun: 112,000
Total in the last 10 months: 1,512,000
Looks like jobs are being created. Oh, and BTW, with regards to NY, I work there (and have for over 20 years), and I know firsthand that jobs are being created in the city, and that Real Estate is going up in price as well as the economic conditions in the city are improving greatly. It is funny that you bring up New York, where the average unemployment rate was 7.26% durng the Clinton years, and now is currently at 6.2%. Looks like your theory has been debunked.
You would like to think a job is a job, but what about pay rates? Can someone who was a computer programmer that just got laid off be happy that he is able to get a job at McDonalds or as a construction worker? I also read that the temporary contracters are on the rise, but again lower pay wages and no insurance offered. Going from $50,000/yr to the $20-25,000 range is not something to be happy about.
I don't know, I guess I am just not seeing what it is you are seeing. As I said, if these new jobs are so great then unemployment should be going down more instead of remaining the same.
A new set of figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show HIGHER-paying jobs growing faster.
