I know that the poll numbers are early, but it is surprising to see that even though Bush's approval numbers continue to remain low, Kerry cannot put a sizable distance between him and President Bush.

Name one challenger to an incumbant that did before the end of July. Even Reagan was 2 points of ahead of Carter in the summer of 1980.
The only challenger that really miffed the polls this early, Ross Perot.
He also was not campaigning very hard either. I think he had had his fill of politics and wanted out.....who can blame him with the way the political arena is today.
Besides, I dont think we have had a sitting President who's approval ratings have been as low as GW Bush since Carter. (BTW, I just checked Carters approval numers at this time, and they make GW Bush look like he is beloved....Carter's approval in 7/80 33%, disapprove 55%....oof, I didnt remember them being that poor....too bad because I actually thought Carter was an honest man.)
Carter couldn't run a country well even on a good day.
He's done a lot of humanitarian work, but, as a President, he was one of the worst. Good heart (except in regards to his major Bush-bashing comments the other night, not that I expected praise, but...).
1. You are voting for someone who you like
2. You are voting against someone you do not like
Ask yourself do you see the glass half full or half empty? It is the same thing. People vote for candidates for different reasons.
People may not like Kerry, that is their choice, but they seem to dislike Bush even more. It should bother Bush that he has had 3 years to prove himself and still he has to fight this hard for his numbers. John Kerry is coming out of nowhere and has to prove everything. This is going to be a close race that is a given. No matter if you look at polls or not, it is easy to see that the country is divided between the 2 people.
If I am not mistaken, he has been a US Senator for the past 20 years.
If he is an unknown that should say something to his supporters about his time in the Senate. Apparently he hasn't done much to speak of if you feel he is coming from nowhere.
Sorry, I am just not into the level of politics as you seem to be. Yet, that really doesn't make me feel all the bad!!!
It seems as though he rides along with Kennedy and they seem to get re-elected year after year.
