Kerry: Bringing Civility Back toPolitics

"We need to turn back some of the creeping, un-Pennsylvanian and sometimes un-American traits that are coming into some of our politics."

"I remember a time when people in political parties in Pennsylvania talked to one another and actually got things done. We have to go back to those days when we can do things properly, for the people need it."

"My prayers for you, for me, for the country, for the world, are that we keep this at a high level, with dignity, with respect and with a great idealism and courage that took our forefathers to build this great nation.">>

Only moments later...

<<Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Democratic nominee John Kerry, told a reporter to 'shove it'>>

If you believe that this kind of behavior is limited to Democrats and not persons of any other political persuasion, you're far less informed than I even thought.

Actually, not less informed. Just bitterly partisan I would guess.

People on the RIGHT AND LEFT spoke out against Cheney's rant (Though I don't see any criticism from you on these forums directed at him) because it was wrong and in poor taste.

So if you have to rank these things on merit: "Shove it" directed at a reporter is worse than "F OFF" directed at a Member of the US Senate?

You talk hypocracy? I say you have a double standard.

How did you find the 1st night of the convention? Gore, still not a great orator, at least wasn't screaming. While I don't agree with him or with what was said last night, I think it was finally figured out that people listen better to what you have to say if it's presented in a calm, reasonable fashion. Dems want to sway the independents (just as the Republicans do, of course) & , at least for the duration of the convention, want to be low-key while trying to their point across. Clinton was his usual self. I'll give him this anyway...he is a great speaker.

--

I liked Gore's speech until he decided to wrap it up with some more Bleeding Heart Florida comments. If he's gonna go there, he should apologize to all his supporters for calling for the selective re-count instead of a full one.... grrrr!

Clinton's always a great speaker, but I wouldn't call his speech very effective. It's just to get the 'Base' cheery and happy yadda yadda yadda....

I thought Carter's speech was more compelling and it reassures my decision to not support Bush in 2004. I did support, canvass, and vote for him in 2000.

The one speech that will matter is Kerry's. If everyone stays awake to hear the whole thing :)

Wait, that's if he has a speech. Well, he doesn't own the speech, his wife does and she has it.

I watched both the speech and the altercation on television.

I won't defend Cheney, but his actions are hardly in the same category as the Pickle Princess's.

She had just given a speech about civility.

She attacked someone who wasn't her equal.

Just seeing you justify Cheney's F*** OFF remark, the Vice President who is and should be held to a higher standard, takes civility out of politics.

So in one regard, you're right: they're hardly in the same category.

You are not fair or equal in your analysis or criticism, but you have a very strong posting record on this forum of being blatantly partisan and continually hold one side to a higher standard than another. Even the title of this thread suggests that.

Partisanship is a lot about what's wrong in American Politics today, you practice it and you're going to receive daily criticism for it.

It wasn't a "reporter"...it was an editorial columnist from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, which is an very conservative Scaife paper that has been blatantly spreading mistruths and lies and doing slash pieces on Heinz-Kerry and the Heinz Foundation, etc. for the last year via the editorial page.

She didn't make the comment to him until she confimed he was from the Trib. In that sense, I do believe it is a more equal offense to Dick Cheney's vulgar retort on the floor of Congress, a reaction to someone that has been badmouthing her for some time. The use of the "un-American activities" phrase was his mistake and allows her plausible deniability.

Another tempest in a teapot, anyway, in my view. I doubt he was phased, and he gets a lot more mileage out of it this way (as do you!).

Cheney isn't the only one using bad language. I didn't understand why conservative talk show hosts made such a deal out of the John Kerry thing, and I don't understand this preoccupation either. No doubt the all politicians do it from time to time, and both sides have been caught using it where it can be overheard by folks that they'd rather not hear it. I'm trying to figure out why the 'F' word, used freely on Reality TV thinly covered up by beeps is such a big deal here? What is the impact on our politics? If anything, it has shown the Cheney and Kerry and others are humans that get angry and frustrated and can't come up with a better word, unfortunately.
