July 31, 2004 -- SCRANTON, Pa. — John Kerry's heavily hyped cross-country bus tour stumbled out of the blocks yesterday, as a group of Marines publicly dissed the Vietnam War hero in the middle of a crowded restaurant.

Kerry was treating running mate Sen. John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, to a Wendy's lunch in Newburgh, N.Y., for their 27th wedding anniversary — an Edwards family tradition — when the candidate approached four Marines and asked them questions.

The Marines — two in uniform and two off-duty — were polite but curt while chatting with Kerry, answering most of his questions with a "yes, sir" or "no, sir."

But they turned downright nasty after the Massachusetts senator thanked them "for their service" and left.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands," one Marine said, adding, "I'm 100 percent against ."

A sergeant with 10 years of service under his belt said, "I speak for all of us. We think that we are doing the right thing in Iraq," before saying he is to be deployed there in a few weeks and is "eager" to go and serve.

The Marines — all of whom serve at nearby Stewart Air Force Base — wouldn't give their names.

I'm more interested in knowing if you think there are foods which only belong to the 'upper crust' and if you think we should reserve the color purple for those of

Evidently what's good enough for our military, isn't good enough for the Heinz-Kerry-Edwardses:

"While Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and his running mate, John Edwards, and their families were having a “lite” lunch at Wendy’s in the Town of Newburgh Friday, drumming up local support right after the national convention in Boston, their real lunches were waiting on their bus.

A member of the Kerry advance team called Nikola’s Restaurant at the Newburgh Yacht Club the night before and ordered 19 five-star lunches to go that would be picked up at noon Friday. Management at the restaurant, which is operated by CIA graduate chef Michael Dederick, was told the meals would be for the Kerry and Edwards families and actor Ben Affleck who was with them on the tour."

Call the National Enquirer, we got a live one....

Seriously, it's beyond belief that anyone wouldn't be satisfied with a Wendy's Burger, myabe a DQ for desert. To eat lunch on their bus, such decadence!

It's a well known fact that GW eats at MacDonald's almost every single day. Why I heard he turned down a lunch date with A Saudi prince to have a Big Mac.

Thank you for clarifying that.

It does not behoove a member of the military to disagree with King George, unless of course such member wishes to be beheaded (so to speak).

Military people do realize their civilian rights will be restricted (free speech is one of them, this applies equally to service under a just, wise and moral leader or one who has his head up his arse.)

The fact is, if a military person disagrees with the action (declaring a needless war)taken by a commander-in-chief, this disagreement will be kept to himself/ herself or there will be Hell to pay. This leads to the conclusion that we do not know if all military people are firmly behind K.George, for if they are not, they dare not say.

Many of them, once their tours are over, are telling family and friends that they feel this war was a huge mistake, but they aren't going to call a press conference - they do not have a death wish...and they never did.

"It does not behoove a member of the military to disagree with King George, unless of course such member wishes to be beheaded (so to speak)."

This is the kind of trash that tears down the democratic party in my eyes. The only people doing beheadings are terroists. A little civility can go a long way in getting your point across. This trash only shuts people out. Maybe heading Kerry's advice about returning civility to politics should extend to his supporters too.

You are right, of course, the edited version follows:

It does not behoove a member of the military to disagree with King George, unless of course such member wishes to be court-martialed and sent to prison in irons.

I hope you share your sensitivities with Rush et al.
