July 31, 2004 -- SCRANTON, Pa. — John Kerry's heavily hyped cross-country bus tour stumbled out of the blocks yesterday, as a group of Marines publicly dissed the Vietnam War hero in the middle of a crowded restaurant.

Kerry was treating running mate Sen. John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, to a Wendy's lunch in Newburgh, N.Y., for their 27th wedding anniversary — an Edwards family tradition — when the candidate approached four Marines and asked them questions.

The Marines — two in uniform and two off-duty — were polite but curt while chatting with Kerry, answering most of his questions with a "yes, sir" or "no, sir."

But they turned downright nasty after the Massachusetts senator thanked them "for their service" and left.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands," one Marine said, adding, "I'm 100 percent against ."

A sergeant with 10 years of service under his belt said, "I speak for all of us. We think that we are doing the right thing in Iraq," before saying he is to be deployed there in a few weeks and is "eager" to go and serve.

The Marines — all of whom serve at nearby Stewart Air Force Base — wouldn't give their names.

Are you saying there is no point in listening to what soldiers have to say because they are coerced into saying it?

"In fact, Kerry isn't "regular" folks, and doesn't eat as most do. " Yes...he dines on the wings of baby eagles. What do you think a political candidate is going to eat when spending a month on a bus? If he ate at Wendy's everyday, he'd have a gut the size of Rush Limbuagh's. (I know...they have a salad bar...)

Here's the link to the "5 Star restaurant" Nikola's, from which the campaign ordered lunch. (The local paper gave it 5 stars...not Zagats.) It looks pretty average, although the menu does look good. Cities up the Hudson can be pretty depressed, but they have a steady supply of good chefs from NYC who want to move to the country and open their own restaurant.

There are no pictures of the Newburgh Yacht Club online, but here's the one in the next town south, which is Peekskill. A fun place, but again...it's no Kennebunkport.

I think that if you actually go to war and survive, you are not a "mock" hero. And i think a lot of veterans would have a real problem with civilians who have never had there with their

Do you expect Kerry, with his schedule, to worry about finding and paying for meals? I'm a relative peon in the advertising field and when I'm busy working on a campaign lunch is provided because everyone knows it would be detrimental to the project to have the entire group wandering out for breakfast, lunch and dinner on our own. There's just no time and it's actually more cost effective to order lunch for us. It's got to be the same for political campaigns, from the local on up to presidential. Your problem with this is just unreasonable. I'm willing to bet cash money that no Presidential candidate has payed for their own lunch, ever. Is it normal? No. Running for president isn't normal.

Anyone can post anything to that website. I could list YOU as a bad tipper if I wanted to spend five minutes to do it. Furthermore, I really doubt that John Kerry is a) sitting around at restaurants and then paying the bill himself or b) running in to pick up takeout. His staff does this, and they may possibly be really bad tippers. I once read somewhere that the President never has any cash on him, or probably even a wallet because he never needs it. It's probably the same with a presidential candidate at this point.
