This is another example of why socialism doesn’t work. The USPS has had a monopoly for so long and has weighted itself down with overhead and bureaucracy to the point that it contracts out parts of its’ legal mandate to private companies, which can and do provide the same service at a lower cost (note the first link whereas the USPS was losing money, but the for-profit carrier can do the same job at a profit).
In the long run this is what happens to ALL socialized/centrally controlled programs. They become lethargic via lack of competition and wind up costing those that need the services or the populace in general more in the long-term.
When one adds in that the USPS lobby is very strong and has legislation preventing private carriers from competing directly with them, it is apparent the USPS can not compete directly (thus the need for the legislation). General mail prices would be lower if the USPS were not allowed to operate free of competition. In fact, it would probably “Wither on the vine†while the populace at large enjoyed lower prices while getting the same service.
