<<"From what I understand about the situation, the UN is the one turning a blind eye to the attorcities in the Sudan, and have been doing so for quite a while. It seems that Kofi Annan is not interested in dealing with the problems of that war torn region, or at least is not making enough noise about it to have the UN actually do something about it.">>..... I totally agree!

Here's an introduction to UN "presence and purpose" in Sudan:

United Nations System in the Sudan Information Pack

<<"The UN system has been a major partner of the Sudanese people for several decades . It has been working to save lives and reduce human suffering, providing essential social services, supporting and enhancing national capacities and resilience along with supporting and strengthening grassroot peace building mechanisms. The UN operates throughout all of the Sudan, using an area-based approach to identify and focus upon priority areas for humanitarian, recovery and developmental interventions.

The UN family is led by the Office of the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sudan and comprises the following agencies:

The Office of the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator serves the United Nations system and partners in the Sudan by providing agreed common services and coordination of policy and programmes. This includes 'Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS)' a framework for delivering humanitarian assistance for South Sudan. OLS has, up to now, provided relief assistance to around 4 million people.

Today, the UN system is re-orienting its work in the Sudan in line with the changing opportunities as the prospects for peace come nearer. Our main guiding framework is outlined in a 'Sudan Assistance Framework (SAF)'. The SAF is still evolving as consultations proceed with all stakeholders. The process prioritises Sudanese ownership and leadership.

The purpose of UN assistance is to:
"promote a peaceful environment that enables the fulfillment of the rights of Sudanese people to survival and protection, to be able to exercise informed choices, and to enjoy equal dignity and development."

The SAF is guided by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which represent a binding consensus among all countries of the world -Sudan included- to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development.

I brought up Sudan as a side note, it was never my intention to "change the thread". How many threads have minor debates going on in them anyway? In the healthcare thread, there were too many little other debates going on.

Point is, when it comes to Sudan all there is being done is talk. Talk is not exactly saving lives is it now? The U.N. is far from perfect, but I see people talking out of both sides of their mouth when it comes to this. First they say the U.N. did not do enough in Iraq so the U.S. had to go in and do the job, but now they are depending on the U.N. to help Sudan. The same happened in Rwanda, just one of many places, and yet no one has learned a lesson or learned how to deal with this effectively.

Again, it is not important enough to the world to help the Sudanese citizens in double time, becuase these citizens have nothing to offer the world. After all they are predominately black, predominately muslim, people with no viable assets. Their land is mostly desert so it is also not worth anything. They do have oil, but not enough to worry about. I see these as factors that partake in the political view of helping someone. Negative? Yeah, but true.
