What will you do if Bush wins?

I would like to know what you all will do if Bush wins? I don't know if I can handle another 4 years. Any ideas of how to reclaim our country and restore democracy and freedom? I'm worried that another 4 years will increase the authoritariansm and absolute power that Bush has come to claim and further trample on our constitution and individual liberties. I'm truly frightened.

Thank you Palak. That was extremely intersting. It is true that Repubs use issues like abortion and gay marriage to distract people from the real issues. It is dangerous to vote on one issue alone. I am pro-choice but if a candidate came along that I agreed with on EVERY OTHER issue except abortion, I might vote for him. We need to stop voting on one issue alone. It is really ridiculous.

"Why would a poor or middle class person keep putting people in power who hord all the resources and make life more difficult for them?" We have a family of five and make about $45,000. Our taxes dropped dramatically thanks to President Bush. Also, small businesses around here (those with about 50-400 employees) are expanding like crazy and HIRING thanks to President Bush's tax cuts. It's the small businesses that employ most people. Unemployment here is only 5 or 5 1/2%, which is very good, and considered full employment by many experts.

You mentioned health care. A good way to bring health care costs down would be to put a cap on lawsuits (like those John Edwards use to do). Dr.'s are quitting practice because they can't afford the insurance they have to carry. In some states it's a real crisis--people cannot find a Dr.! Capping those lawsuits, and throwing out of court the frivilous ones, would go a long way towards improving health care. Also, a great way to bring down prescription drug costs would be to go back to the days when drug companies weren't spending a fortune on advertising on TV, in magazines, etc.

I really like President Bush's ideas for social security and letting people invest on their own. The people can better handle their own money than the government can.

"YOU move out of the country."

Yes, if he is re-elected, *I* would like to move out of the country. I don't like the way the last 3 1/2 years have been during his presidency.

"You should go to China where you can practise your authoritarian ways. This country was founded on freedom and democracy. Especially protecting us from the "tyranny of the majority." The founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves if they saw the likes of you. READ A HISTORY BOOK! EDUCATE YOURSELF"

*Sigh*. This is the reason I rarely visit this board, let alone post on it. I'm of the same opinion you are, yet you attack me. Even if we didn't agree on this, what you've written here is really uncalled for. "My authoritarian ways"? "The likes of me"? I'm very well educated, thank you, and you have no idea what sort of books I read. You really shouldn't be so rude and judgemental towards someone you've never met.

Well, it's no secret that I dislike this current administration. If Bush wins again I will have a sinking feeling in my gut. However, I don't think very much will change regardless of who is elected. Kerry's stance on Iraq is not profoundly different enough to give me any comfort (also, it's too late to change course dramatically on that issue anyway). Whatever the election result will be (and it will be extremely close), America will still be sharply divided along party lines and the person in power (whoever that is) will have a difficult time making any sort of decision or policy without having it blindly critisized, picked apart and coupled with all sorts of irrelivant personal attacks. As an outsider, this is what I find to be the biggest hurdle facing America today. It's like you are two different countries and this will stay that way for years (maybe decades) to come.

One thing that may change for the better if Kerry comes into power is relationships with other nations. Perhaps he will be better able to get international cooperation. Bush and co. has burned his bridges.

Perhaps what is needed for many is another 4 years of Bush for the shine to go off the apple. I fear that if Kerry does get in, no one (particularly on the right) will look at anything he does with any objectivity or open-mindedness. Kerry (and Bush) are not really ideal candidates to get America through this trying post 9/11 period in history but unfortunately, that's what you have to work with. If Kerry wins, Bush will remain on his pedestal and become even more idealized and people will not be able to let it go. If Bush does remain in power he will continue on his path of dividing the country (and the world) and things will continue to deteriorate anyway (though, with America's power and riches, there is still a lot of wiggle room and the country will recover). However, the mistakes will be HIS and perhaps that is what it will take in the end. Maybe his handlers will slip up and like the wizard in the Wizard of Oz, the curtain will slip and Bush will be revealed for what he truely is.

It's a sacrifice I know and many Americans who highly dislike Bush will find this difficult and frustrating to swallow. But in the end, maybe it will be for the best. Like a war (where many say you have to sacrifice civilian lives to obtain victory). Perhaps having to sacrifice another four years to Bush will be what is necessary as well.

Perhaps they want to make their own choices about how their money will be spent rather than handing it over to the government to control in a very inefficient, wasteful manner?

< made it easier for the rich to keep on stealing from the majority>

The rich are not "stealing" from anyone. The top 20% income earners in this country pay something like 90% of all federal income taxes. The bottom 20% pay nothing, in fact many of them get tax refunds of taxes they haven't even paid due to earned income tax credits and such. Why hard work and success such a crime to some people? Please if you have any evidence that the rich have "stolen" anything from anyone, please post it.

I know nothing of the sort. Two thirds of al quaeda leadership has been captured or killed, with more apprehended almost daily. Al quaeda is in shambles, its sources of funding are drying up, sorry, I believe we ARE safer than we were four years ago.

"...what will you do if Bush wins?"

That has been on my mind for a long time and its something we may have to live with. I think with all the military yahoos out there all hyped up with this war monger administration that they've convinced alot of the scaredycats that Bush is the only guy who can protect us, what with all the attack ads against Kerry as if he is less able which is just plain stupid since at least he can get the other nations to join us whereas Bush & Co. have alienated us from the rest of the civilized world...

I guess i'll just wait and see if America comes to their senses :)
