Was with a bit of amusement that I saw the Republicans in here has a thread that we are supposed to stay out of (see Republican Treehouse)....guess they feel a need to have secret meetings, and might even have a secret handshake to get through the door, so thought those of us on the side of reason and intellect should have our own little hide-away as it were. So, kick your shoes off, pour yourself a drink and lets discuss the issues.

Powell worked in a number of different andministrations. His book My American Journey is very interesting. Throughout that time he was an independant. I don't know if he is now a registered Republican. I'm wondering if that might not have been a prerequisite for working in the Bush administration or not.

I've been hearing on the news recently that Kerry will be adding some new faces in order the jump start his campaign. Rumour has it that that people aren't too happy with the way it's being run...what he needs is a Karl Rove....but a NICE one with scruples. I wonder if it's impossible be nice and run a successful political campaign.

The Bush family could have afforded Yale without blinking an eye. I'm sure the money would not have been an issue and I don't think that when Bush was drinking and snorting coke that he had any designs on the presidency.

What I find amazing, is the whole laundry list that Republicans seem content to ignore when it comes to the Bush Clan:

1. Bush Daddy Seniors use of his political clout to have his son's name moved from 500 to number one on the list when his precious baby only had six days left on his deferment comes quickly to mind....I personally hold more respect for those who fled to Canada to oppose the war than I do for a man who deliberately and with malice manipulated the system so someone else could go in his place.

2. Again pushed his might and wealth to get his son into Yale despite very low SAT scores

and we all know how dismal his academic record was at Yale.

3. Laura Bush's family using their own stature in the community of a rural town to get the police to decide her cold blooded vehicular murder of a young man while under the influence of alcohol was nothing more than a tragic accident, and so did not press vehicular manslaughter charges against her in a criminal proceeding.

4. George Bush's own DUI convictions...yes, that is PLURAL, not singular.

5. George Bush's own admittance to be addicted to cocaine. To think, he got elected in part to the Whitehouse on the pledge of bringing moral clarity and respect back to the Whitehouse...PLEASE.

6. Some very shady business deals abound all over the place.

7. Very close intimate ties to the Bin Laden family...let none of us forget, that while the entire fleet of American planes of every type were grounded after 9/11, that it was Bush himself who cleared the way of the Osama Family jet to take them all out of country, and thus out of the line of questioning by members of the FBI.

I would think this small partial list would be more than enough proof that the Bush legacy is one that cannot be trusted, and that their personal values and morals are more than a little suspect.

Actually, and do not quote me on this, but as I recall, when he retired after Iraq War 1 commonly known as Desert Storm, he was wooed by both parties, and chose to take the path being offered by the Republicans...think in part this decision could have been made on the merits of his own perceptions about Clinton and his own lack of service at the time. Now though, it is painfully obvious that the man has become very saddened and disillusioned with the Bush administration, and I believe to a degree the Republican Party. It would be a devastating blow to the Republicans if he does switch horses on them as he gives them a great deal of respect that they do not deserve.

Yes, they are trying to put a good face on it by claiming they are just bringing staff up to the neccessary levels needed for the fall campaign, but the reality is, right now we are in deep water after the Swift Boat ads. It's still a dead heat statistically, but the Repukes sadly made up a lot of ground in August which we could not afford to give them since we all know they will get a bounce out of the convention, which means we will have to make up more instead of less after it is over, and we only have two months left to do it in.

Personally, I think there are all kinds of things that the campaign is missing the boat on. For instance, in those battleground states, feel a very stark, dark add with the figures scrolling up the screen with a solumn voice droning on....5 million more Middle CLass Americans living in poverty, Negative Job Creation Rate of 1.2 million jobs in Bush Administration.....on and on for most of the 30 seconds, then the simple question "Can You Afford Another Four Years of George Bush? Vote Kerry for Change in 2004 That message needs to be hammered home again and again and again. Almost identical commercial, but with the question slightly altered....Can your children and their children afford four more years of George Bush, which would drive home the message that his fiscal policy will not just affect the financial well being of our generation, but for generations to come.

I also think we need to be hitting on the HAlliburton issue, on the hiding of records issue, on the August 6th ignored Presidential Briefing. Right or Wrong, the Rebublicans are fighting one of the dirtiest campaigns in American history, and if we do not get down in the gutter and fight them at their own level, we are going to lose this race.

I think Colin Powell is a man of profound moral standing and sense of duty as well as a proud American. Combine that with the fact that he is an excellent soldier above all. He would not do that at this point in time. He is bound to obey his commaner in chief regardless of the fact that he may have little respect for him.

Knowing how this administration works, I'm sure he realizes that if he says anything that goes counter to the party line he will have his character publically assasinated...no one is free of at least ONE skeleton in their closet and if there isn't one, they will make one up.

Perhaps when the Bush administration is finally out of power he may come forth with some new information.

I agree that he will NOT cause trouble through this term, he made a committment to serve the president for a period of four years, and being honorable, he will fulfill that committment, and give the loyalty he is honor bound by his principles to give. I will though be VERY surprised if he signs on for another four years, and if he does not, look for a scathing book to be out within six months of his leaving office.

I will be very disappointed that I misjudged him if he signs back on....If Bush wins I don't think he will write such a book until the he is out of power. Perhaps if Kerry gets in he might.

Did you read his first book? If not, I highly recommend it.
