Was with a bit of amusement that I saw the Republicans in here has a thread that we are supposed to stay out of (see Republican Treehouse)....guess they feel a need to have secret meetings, and might even have a secret handshake to get through the door, so thought those of us on the side of reason and intellect should have our own little hide-away as it were. So, kick your shoes off, pour yourself a drink and lets discuss the issues.

Either by happenstance or design, I've been with John McCain for three nights in a row and have watched the magic he works on people. At a dinner one evening, someone asked the secret of his appeal. A colleague and I looked at each other in disbelief. It's his honesty, his willingness to (mostly) say what's on his mind. He just clears his throat and says what has to be said. John Kerry ought to try it. It could make him president.

Every time I read the title of this thread, my eyes automatically read "no REBUKES welcome" instead.

Yeah...his Dad pulled some strings and got him into his old alma mater...he spent a lot of his time drinking and partying and got very poor marks, barely passing...one wonders if he even earned those marks.

And don't forget he was an alcoholic and cocaine user then too.

Shall put it on my list for the next trip to Barnes and Noble...which is sometime this week since I am on vacation. As for his book....I just do not see him waiting in light of his huge rift with Rumsfield, Cheney and even Bush himself.

I have a question that has been bothering me greatly. My extreme dislike of Bush stems from the War in Iraq. Kerry has said that he supports the war....in fact he voted for it. I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt realizing that after 9/11 most Americans wanted to (and rightly so) stand by their president. Also, while I had read much about the possibility that the evidence of links to Bin Ladden (especially) and the existance of WMDs were either overblown and faulty BEFORE the war, I was willing to accept the fact that others might not have paid as close attention to this and/or chose to believe what the administration was saying. Also, I have been following the history and politics of Iraq for quite some time and KNEW that the Iraqis would NOT greet Americans with open arms as was claimed by the administration. Not everyone had that kind of understanding (but I was frustrated buy the refusal of this administration to listen to experts in the field who predicted the bloody resistance that is currentluy going on). So I can fully understand why some people like Kerry, might have supported the war in the beginning. This is all fine. Though personally, I think it would have been better to have a candidate that had proven serious doubts in the beginning.

Kerry has said though that he would still have voted the way he did knowing what he knows today about the faulty intelligence.

Now, from what I have observed on THESE boards at least is not a single Democrat supports the decision to go to war in Iraq. How can you reconcile this in your support of Kerry?

Just to elaborate on my opinion about the war, unlike some, now that Iraq is in the state that it's in, I do not think it would be wise to pull out now.

Hello:

This might, I hope, Help you understand...one word bandied about often during this election is nuance, with Kerry understanding it, and Bush either totally oblivious or uncaring about it.

The original vote as approved, gave the President the Power to use war as an option, but do not think Kerry and most of the rest of elected officials expected it to be Bush's first option, but HIS LAST. Kerry says he would have voted the same, because the vote was not for war, but approving the use of it if ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

As you also correctly pointed out, now that we are there, already embroiled in things with the country totally ripped apart right now, we cannot simply close up shop and go home.

Thank-you for that explanation. I was wondering if you had a source where this is explained. Where/When did Kerry say that his <>

It reminds me...I forget where I heard this last night. Someone said while discussing the Kerry's inability to rise up against the attacks against him was that he HAS given good reasons for the stands he has taken. This person said that if you listen carefully Kerry always explains himself. Personally, I appreciate nuance as I am kind of this way myself (as you can probably tell from some of my extremely wordy posts). This could be his downfall however because very few people (especially opponents and those who traditionally never vote) are not willing to listen carefully. They find it tiresome or boring or over their heads.

On the other side of the equation, the total lack of depth in Bush is something that really grates on my nerves (and a lot of other people). I find his repetitive little statements boring...or rather I would if what he is supposed to be saying weren't so darned important.

If we could only find a leader that combines the simple delivery of Bush with the nuanced thoughtfullness of Kerry. However, it really is difficult to distill the complex issues facing the world today in snappy sound bites but unfortunately, that's what a lot of people like. Well I suppose it can be done if you leave out some very important things....like the entire truth.

I suppose when you look at the average person you could probably say to them (Jack Nicolson reference coming up)

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

How can Kerry find that happy medium?

But immedaitely he was allowed to clarify what he said, what he meant on radio interview with Rush Limbaugh. How come Kerry is not allowed to explain the sound bites twisted by Rush and the likes. The double standard is so obvious it is sickening.
