Keyes: Cheney's Daughter a Sinner
Wednesday, September 01, 2004
NEW YORK — Illinois Republican Senate candidate Alan Keyes (search) labeled homosexuality "selfish hedonism" and said Vice President Dick Cheney's (search) lesbian daughter is a sinner.
The former talk show host who has made two unsuccessful runs for the White House made the comments Monday night in an interview with Sirius OutQ, a satellite radio station that provides programming aimed at gays and lesbians.
After saying homosexuality is "selfish hedonism," Keyes was asked if that made Mary Cheney (search) "a selfish hedonist."
"Of course she is," Keyes replied. "That goes by definition."
Liz Cheney (search), Mary's sister, refused to comment Wednesday during a televised interview.
"I guess I'm surprised, frankly, that you would even repeat the quote, and I'm not going to dignify it with a comment," she told the interviewer.
The Log Cabin Republicans (search), a gay and lesbian organization, denounced Keyes' remark.
"In a political career defined by failures, this is a new low for Alan Keyes," executive director Patrick Guerriero said in a statement Wednesday. "Attacking politician's children is beyond the pale, even for an extremist like Alan Keyes."

I must add that this goes beyond critizing the way someone talks, dresses or acts. This is declaring Cheney's daughter a sinner simply for being the way God made her. I'm amazed gays aren't much angrier than they are. How can people who were born 100% heterosexual be so judgemental about people who weren't. Hey guys, it's a simple shake of the chromosomes. Someday that will be so obvious that people will look back & wonder how we could have been so blind & ignorant.
I know, this was so way out of line.

After having read your post that is referenced above, I personally cannot see any way for it to be construed as anything less than the gravest of personal attacks on a member, and feel I have to ask you...do you report yourself when you violate the rules of iVillage in, from my perspective, such a flagrant and violent fashion as this? I have no objections to you disagreeing with my positions, or my politics, do not even ask that you like me, and am fine with you insulting the various positions I take on the issues....but serious, I find this post truly saddening and offensive.
