Can anyone give me a link to a Democrat primer? Renee kindly provided one for Republicanism, and I would like to see exactly what the Democrats are all about.

In case anyone missed the flag by my name, I'm a Brit and am just trying to figure out the different 'camps'.

Thank you

Try http://www.dems2004.org and if that doesn't help too much just try searching for Democrats in google/yahoo search engines. XOXO.

Thanks but that site seems to mainly be for people who've already chosen a side. I need something like you'd give a child to teach it about the American political system, or to an immigrant who'd just got citizenship but knew nothing about the parties.

Thank you, that's useful, I especially like what it says about the environment - quite a contrast to Bush's tactic of vetoing international environmental strictures.

I'm probably really annoying everyone with this now, but I'd still like to see a very basic schoolage type page laying out the foundation of Democrat politics

:o)

Hi Lianne,

The problem is that the American political system has evolved so much over the years .... the Democratic Party no longer stands for what it did 100 or even 15 years ago. What's more, you will find different factions within both parties (Republican and Democrat) that stand for different things. Many Democrats (and, today, the party direction in general) are more liberal or left-leaning; others are more moderate or centrist. So, it's tough to pin down one source that defines in itself what the Democratic Party stands for. Just like, as Renee pointed out to you yesterday, not all Republicans are religious conservatives; many do not even believe in God.

I know this isn't much help, but thought it was important to point out!

P.S. If you have access to a good selection of American books in your library, you might want to check out the new book "Homegrown Democrat" by American humorist Garrison Keillor. I recently bought it and while I haven't read it yet, it seems he has done a good job of communicating core Democratic Party values in it (although there also seems to be a fair amount of the requisite Bush-bashing as well).

Has anyone else read the book yet?

Encarta Encyclopedia 2001 has excellent articles on the political parties. You might see if one of the online encyclopedia's can give you some background that would be helpful and even more up to date.
