Audience boos as Bush offers best wishes for Clinton's recovery

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) _ President Bush on Friday wished Bill Clinton "best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery."

"He's is in our thoughts and prayers," Bush said at a campaign rally.

Bush's audience of thousands in West Allis, Wis., booed. Bush did nothing to stop them.

Bush offered his wishes while campaigning one day after accepting the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in New York. Clinton was hospitalized in New York after complaining of mild chest pain and shortness of breath.

Bush recently praised Clinton when the former president went to the White House for the unveiling of his official portrait. He lauded Clinton for his knowledge, compassion and "the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president."

AP had to retract that story because the reporter lied. The people at the rally did not boo. They behaved respectfully - and really publicized the lie. The other reporters confirmed that AP lied, (and I'll bet somone had it on film) so they took it offline for a while, then deleted the lie (about the booing) and deleted the reporter's by-line. Newsday must have picked it up before they corrected it. What a pathetic, desperate thing to do.

This story is being contested by right wing folks based, unfortunatlely, on audio of the speech posted on blogs. It seems a speaker's microphone doesn't pick up crowd noise very well and some partisans are jumping on this, claiming that's proof that the story was exaggerated. I've read reports that the AP has changed their initial story, and if that's true, they should be ashamed. Which way does a microphone point on a podium?

I don't know if anyone noticed during the RNC, but there were certain times when the speaker's audio sounded like regular, studio TV, and other times where it got really boomy and reverby and you could tell they were speaking in a huge arena. Why? Because sometimes they were mixing in the microphones that were placed to pick up crowd noise. The only thing any of these blog audio clips proves is that the boos weren't deafening. I'd rely on a first hand account by a reporter above an audio recording intended to pick up only President Bush.

Why was this the only reporter that heard it? He wasn't the only reporter in the room. The ABC Radio Network has also confirmed that this was a false story.

I'm glad reporters can't get away with making up stories anymore. Here's a story about the retraction.

AP Retracts 'Clinton Booed' Story

The Associated Press has retracted its Friday afternoon report that a crowd at a Bush rally in West Allis, Wisc., booed when President Bush offered ex-President Clinton best wishes for a speedy recovery from coronary bypass surgery scheduled for next week.

In a report that moved on the AP wire at 9:27 a.m. Saturday, the AP said:

"This is a correction to an incorrect story posted by AP on Friday stating the crowd booed the President when he sent his good wishes. The crowd, in fact, did NOT boo."

A transcript of Bush's remarks released by the White House noted applause after Bush offered Clinton "best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery."

ABC Radio Network news also confirmed that the Clinton reference was applauded, not jeered.

In its original version of the story, the AP had reported: "Bush's audience of thousands in West Allis, Wis., booed. Bush did nothing to stop them."

The erroneous report prompted a firestorm of outrage on interactive news Web sites like FreeRepublic.com, where posters complained of media bias and circulated contact numbers to protest the AP's false claim.

In a revised version of the story that moved on the wire late Friday, the AP said: "The crowd reacted with applause and with some 'ooohs,' apparently surprised by the news that Clinton was ill."

I hope that's the case iminnie.

Thanks for the update.

Maybe they were shouting "boo-urns"?

Obscure Simpsons reference.

Anyway, I hope Clinton's going to be ok.

I heard Cheney called him and wished him well.

Here's what mean-spirited conservatives are saying online:

No doubt his arteries are clogged up with pounds of MacDonalds hamburgers and pizzas.

I hope his big honkin' bible is printed on asbestos so he can carry it with him.

Give him a enema and send him home.

The widow Hillary will gather the sympathy vote in 08'

His state funeral won't be 1/20th of Reagan's

sorry, I cant muster any sympathy. I'd feel the same if they said Saddam was gettin bypass surgery. It's a waste of time and money.

I truly believe that the timing of this surgery is quite suspect, especially after the very successfull Republican Convention. Next, it'll be his prostate, or similar when Chairman Maoth needs some sympathy 'votes.' BJ had better be carefull going under the knife with Herself around. The dRATS may need a 'martyr' to rally the troops someday and he's their Ronald Reagan.

I would be a hypocrite if I wished this evil man well.

God's will be done.

Okay...some people said nice things and alot of people held their tongues (in an obvious "hey look...I'm holding my tongue" way) but I have no problem beleiving that more than a few people booed upon hearing the news, especially at a Bush rally.

If they were at a Bush rally, you can rest assured they are all rabid Bush supporters.

Anyone who doesn't sign a 'pledge of allegiance' to support Bush is not allowed entry to his rallies.

I'm having a hard time finding other verification of the retraction by the AP.

The link iMinnie provided is to a site very slanted towards the right wing.

I'm sure if it was retracted by the AP, it will be on other sites as well.

I think it's sweet how people are reacting to Clinton's surgery. He had it Saturday didn't he? I hope it went okay. XOXO.

Oh and by reacting I mean those who are wishing him well and not showing hard feelings. Not the people poking jokes. XOXO.

Yeah, I don't trust a thing posted on NewsMax. Something like this is usually on the Drudge Report right away, but there's nothing there.
