And what is the real value of uninformed, uneducated opinion? It's worthless, unless of course someone is uninterested in objective fact and are merely counting on people's ignorance of the subject to carry the day. From all practical, objective indicators public opinion on this is largely the result of not knowing what they're talking about.
Silly me... Here I was thinking that an educated, informed public was much to be preferred.
Being a Paramedic, I am worried. I have been shot at, have been stabbed. I worry about my brothers and sisters in public safty, alot of people do not relize what we face out on the streets.I am not for taking away your hunting guns, but I think someone with 20 rounds or more is a danger to public health. Don't you? I was looking at the footage of the people who held all of those people hostage in Russia, the weapons were of all kinds. Mostly bombs but some of these guys had assalt weapons. This realy scares me. I love my job,I love helping people. But now some of the guys are talking of fund rasing for vest. Maybe that will help us, at lest our boys and girl on the police force have vest. If they just wear them!!! But they will not protect you if they get in a head shot.
Why are the police cheifs against the lifting of ban on semi automatics then? The semi automatic can fire some 30 rounds in I don't know 1 sec? The more stricter the laws are against such weapons the more harder will be for anyone to acquire it, I would think... Who better to talk about it than Police cheifs?
I don't blame you much given the nature of the situations you find yourself in, but there's no practical difference between the assault weapons in question and non-banned lookalikes of them. In fact, there is no functional difference between them.
No, I don't particularly think someone with a 20-round magazine poses an inherent threat to anyone or anything. Whether it's a 20-round or a couple of 10-round magazines, it only takes a couple of seconds to change them out.
As for the situation in Russia with the school hostages, the firearms used there were assault *rifles*, not the assault *weapons* being discussed here. Assault rifles are fully automatic, whereas assault weapons (as in those addressed by the AWB) are semi-auto... big difference which is often overlooked or obscured.
I hardly think that criminals will go through the "offical steps required by law" to acquire ANY type of firearm.
I don't see how anything other than tougher law enforcement and harsher penalties will lower crime rates.
I'm sure police officers would like ALL weapons to be banned for their personal safety but that is not in the public's best interest. I don't want a government ruling over me that HAS the right to weapons and I don't. Start banning certain weapons, and just like everything else, what's next?
Mark, thanks for the info, on the diff of assault weapons, I had no idea. I'm still concerned that guns are to accesable, and I would like to see more gun control, for my safety and yours. Thanks for answering my question in an educated manner, it was nice for a change.
So what is the point of an assault "weapon/rifle", auto or semi auto unless it is to kill human beings? No self respecting hunter would be caught dead or a live with one.
