Dan Rather just apologized for using FAKE documents to attempt to slander the reputation of our sitting president in wartime in an attempt to sway the election. Maybe he didn't use those words, but that's the way it shakes out.
He did NOT say that he and CBS were going to persue and expose the perpetrators of this act. Wonder why not? Their credibility is shot. Their only hope at restoring ANY credibility in the future would be to turn on their source and rat him out. Unless, CBS is the source... Or John Kerry's campaign...
The only way I could see CBS recovering from this would be to fire EVERYONE on the CBS Evening News and start over.

Why not? Plenty of people here refuse to even visit a supporting link if it has a hint of "bias" or support for Bush.
Oh, wait, I get it. That only applies if you support Bush. If it's an anti-Bush "report" then credibility standards are much lower and so even if the source is forged, the message it contains can still be true. Unless it supports Bush.
Thank you for clearing that up.
She has not confirmed the information in the memos, she has confirmed that, according to her 30 year old recollections, they accurately reflect her perception of Killian's "feelings" towards Bush, a perception that has been disputed by many others close to Killian. If you want to call that proof, you have a lower standard of proof than I do.
The production of these alleged documents would be my definition of proof, not one admitted Bush despiser's vague recollections which contradict so many others'. Just out of curiosity, why do you choose to believe her but disbelieve so many others who dispute her account? It really boggles my mind the contortions of logic some are willing to go through in order to believe the worst about this president.
And I heard a report last night that Mary Mapes, the producer of the story, called Lockhart pre-60 minutes broadcast to pass the info along to him. She, if no one else at CBS, ought to be fired. Contacting a presidential campaign advisor to let him in on a damaging news story about the opposing candidate? Not sure I would call it treason, but it hardly seems like solid journalistic ethics.
You know, I used to laugh at the far right's claims about the "liberal media conspiracy", not that I thought no bias existed, but I never really believed it was so overt and intentional. The more info that comes out about this story, the more one has to wonder.
Why on earth would they do that? Are you trying to claim that they are such ardent supporters of Bush, even though their husband/father supposedly had great disdain for the man, that they would lie about Killian's views and hide or destroy his personal documents? That seems logical to you, that the family of a man who supposedly had so many problems with Bush on the job would betray their own father/husband's memory in order to support Bush? Why? Yet you have no trouble believing that a woman who has admitted that she CAN'T STAND Bush is telling the complete and unvarnished truth?
On what basis do you discount first hand information from others who disagree with the woman?
Like you said, the dems have been persuing this "story" about Bush for a long time...Everyone knew that the election would probably be close in 2000, why didn't they find anything back then? There wasn't anything to find!
Logic confounds liberals.
I hope she learns a lesson by ending up on the unemployment line, since we know Rather won't take the fall for her screw up.
Think of it like a digital signal. It's either on or off. It either happened, or it didn't. I work on SANs, and this is the only analogy I can think of...that accurately depicts all the junk going on now between these two camps.
Everything has turned into a He said, She said.... I don't believe Rather is going to get into trouble for all of this. Mary Mapes ought to be the one to hang out to dry at CBS. If she is not...I fear CBS will go "down the tubes" (sorry - couldn't resist!)
If I were a CBS exec and I wanted to recover and prevail over this whole mess I think I would:
1. Fire Dan before he "retires"
2. take the CBS evening news OFF the air until after the election is over. Yeah they'd lose a hell of a lot of money but their credibility is shot. Look at the long view, try to find a new audience.
3. research why FOX News is doing so well
4. come back with a whole new format for the CBS News based on what the MAJORITY of Americans want...Fair coverage of ALL political perspectives. Not a bunch of liberals acting like they aren't biased.
***Of course I'm not a business-minded person, I don't know if this would work or not. Sure would be bold though!
