I thought that the speech was great. Respectful yet strong. Bush is relentless in defending the reasons for establishing democracy in Afghanistan and Iraq and the possibility of long term peace for the middle east as a result of steadfast resolve.

He showed appreciation for the nations helping us (unlike Kerry) and opened the door for more nations to get involved.

Would anyone have expected less from George W. Bush?

Well, I guess those that hate him will find plenty to fault him. After all, he doesn't change his mind about everything to suit everybody every couple of days!

According to Kerry, Bush "missed an opportunity" to repair our relationship with our allies.

I guess Kerry has truly convinced himself that he could have persuaded France, Russia and Germany to support military action, either that, or he knows he would have abided by the UN, and sat around and did nothing.

Yes, it's a good thing Bush decided to take action before the facts were in, THEN discover he'd made a mistake. Hey, it's only a war, what can it hurt?

Maybe....or maybe he would have put more effort and money (now being wasted in Iraq) into tightening up emergency response infrastructure, ports and borders in America....perhaps he would have worked more closely with other governments to root out terrorist cells that are operating internationally. Perhaps he would have made more of an effort to really clean up Afghanistan (whose invasion was supported on an international level and the links to Al Quaida were clear). Perhaps the sympathy felt worldwide for the US after 9/11 would not have eroded so badly to the point where it is today - sheer hatred on an unprecedented scale for the US under this administration. Perhaps American troops not having been streched so thin in Iraq would have been in a better position to deal with other nations of more concern than Iraq was at the time....like Iran.

Bush's speeches are always finely crafted, very predictable and fit his personality well. This is most likely why he remains so popular at home.

However, it might be too little too late. It is being viewed on a larger scale as merely another campaign speech (in a different setting) and given what he and his administration think of the UN (which is no secret) his flowery compliments are coming off as rather insincere to say the least.

Let's face it he wasn't REALLY speaking to the UN....he was speaking to his base.

Doubtful

With Kerry's history, he would not have provided any additional funding for security measures.

If we didnt go in, we would never know that the facts were wrong.

It's difficult to say. To be fair, Bush had a questionable history himself before becoming president.

It's always nice to look at the bright side irregardless of the fact that the unfinished weapons inspections were pointing quite strongly in that direction. I think the Bush administration were fearful that the inspections would do that so they decided to go in before they were finished. Also, it would have been cheaper to simply move a lot of the troops and equipment already in Afghanistan then bring them home and have to send them all back out again. However penny wise and pound foolish as they say. It appears that inadequate planning and international support for Iraq will end up costing a heck of a lot more in the end.

The justifications for this war keep changing like shifting sands....now maybe it will be because in the absense of actual proof, the US wanted to confirm whether or not their intelligence was accurate. This might work well to justify any number of future invasions as well.
