>> Buckley saw the loss of personal freedoms & social liberties as one of the consequences and started a movement within the Republican Party to 'conserve' the Constitution (protect civil rights & liberties & limit the role of the federal government). <<
Guess he's spinning in his grave with the Patriot Act huh?
He may be spinning in his easy chair, which I assume gets more use since he retired a few months ago, but it's not caused by the Patriot Act.
What you don't seem to get is that there are ALWAYS restrictions and contractions of personal freedoms during times of WAR, but evenso, the Patriot Act is hardly re-creating
I vote for the person who I agree most on things I care about (economy, health care, education, enviornment, pro-choice in no certain order) and then if they are President and keep their word about what they say they're going to do I'd vote for them again. If not I'd give the other person a chance (whether democrat or republican) and then decide which one is the best job whether I'm a democrat or not. That's what my mother does and seems to work for her and I think it's pretty fair personally. XOXO.
i am disappointed. that response was kind of closed minded (about the films) and it implies that by deciding to see a movie I (and millions of other adults) lie in gutters - which is really insulting. it's just a movie, it's not a scary contagious cootie monster who will harm you. i actually wonder if people who write things off before they read or see for themselves are afraid of what they will see/learn.
i suggest people who haven't seen something don't attempt to discuss it, unless it's qualified by an "I heard from a friend" type comment, or "I haven't seen it, but" type question. (Not just you Wrhen, I mean in general for me and anybody! I think that would make more sense as far as having an intelligent dialogue- just my two cents, I'm sure someone will squawk about it).
but thank you for the color advice - seriously! :)
I think you're right, Russia is not something we should distract ourselves with the most at the moment. Good point. I must have been in a huff when I made that point, or listening to an alarmist Putin story on the news.

Careful, you border on sounding presumptuous and insulting about the level of my knowledge, education, and exposure to many people's experiences. My objection (in explaining about the many non-Republican MOMS i know) to your comments (where you generalize about people who all think one way, or evolve in one direction politically) was simply that: I happen to disprove your theory because I know plenty of people who don't fit the "mold" you described, that's all i was saying.
Anyway, I would like to presume you weren't trying to insult me :) For the record: I live in the middle of the most diverse city in the U.S.; I graduated with honors from a Big 10 univ.; I have lived in wis., mich., and N.carolina before I settled in nyc. I spent my twenties traveling for long work assignments to Gainesville, Indianapolis, Akron, Cleveland, Chicago, and Long Island. My brothers live in L.A. and SanFran, one of my husband's sisters is a mom in So.California and the other is in a gay partnership with a deaf woman in Penn. I have a gay cousin who was adopted from South America as a baby, another teenage cousin in the ROTC, and another cousin whose work is taking college students on international tours. I work at a company that has branches in 39 countries, I live near a big city park in a building with low-income (rent control) tenants & middle class owners who bought their units, I share the elevators & washing machines w/ students, painters, lawyers, parents-- who are Hispanic, Asian, Afr.-American, German (one married to an Indian woman), British, Caribbean, Caucasian, etc. Our next-door neighbor's mom visits 2x a year from India and cooks amazing curry for us (Mmmm). My husband's parents are republican, my dad is a corporate retiree (more Dem. than ever) and my mom is a former teacher now on chemo for cancer. I was married 9 yrs ago in a catholic mass and just attended a bridal shower for my Jewish friend. I have single friends, friends with kids, divorced & remarried friends, and my oldest friend in the world is a doctor & mom living in a midwest suburb.
I think I never really realized how broad my life experience is until you implied that it wasn't! hee hee. thx! And I bet every single person, if they broke it down, would realize the broad variety of "types" of people they have in their life & their past. This diversity we all experience in our life hopefully shows us: people don't ALL follow one mold, or live life ALL the same. That's what makes AMERICA great after all :)
