CRAWFORD, Texas - A weekly newspaper that bills itself as President Bush's hometown paper endorsed John Kerry for president, saying the Massachusetts senator will restore American dignity.

The Lone Star Iconoclast, which has a circulation of 425, said in an editorial dated Sept. 29 that Texans should rate the candidates not by hometown or political party, but by where they intend to take the country.

"Four items trouble us the most about the Bush administration: his initiatives to disable the Social Security system, the deteriorating state of the American economy, a dangerous shift away from the basic freedoms established by our founding fathers, and his continuous mistakes regarding Iraq" the editorial said.

The Iconoclast, established in 2000, said it endorsed Bush that year. It also said it editorialized in support of the invasion of Iraq, and publisher W. Leon Smith promoted Bush and the invasion in a British Broadcasting Corp. interview, believing Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction.

"Instead we were duped into following yet another privileged agenda," the editorial said.

The newspaper praised Kerry for "30 years of experience looking out for the American people" and lauded his background as "a highly decorated Vietnam veteran."

I dont see the irony in it, especially if the Editor in Chief (who makes the decisions) doesnt particularly like Bush.

Again, it will be symbolic if Kerry wins Texas or Bush wins Massachusetts, and I think we can both agree that neither is going to happen.

>>I dont see the irony in it<<

IRONY: Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=irony

1. Texas is a so-called Red State..

2. Bush has his "ranch" in the town of Crawford Texas.

3. Bush's hometown paper in Crawford Texas endorsed Bush in 2000.

A reasonable person would expect Bush's hometown paper to re-offer that endorsement for Bush again in 2004.

Ironically, they didn't.

Hi Mifskie,

I saw you were cruising the board and I just wanted to say thank you for the friendly message.

You are a great example for the rest of us on here.

You and I may not always see eye-to-eye politically but you are civil and polite.

Just a little FYI for the liberals who don't know what they are talking about...Crawford, TX is NOT President Bush's "hometown". He and the first lady purchased the ranch in 1999. President Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut, and he grew up in Midland and Houston, Texas.

Kerry will NOT take Texas. Its not possible. I live in Houston and all you see everywhere you go are Bush/Cheney bumper stickers and signs. Anyone with a Kerry sticker gets the finger out here.

For the millionth time, Crawford is NOT the president's hometown. They have owned property there for 5 years.

I'm not sure about Midland. I don't read the Houston Post because the local news in Houston always seems to be about gloom and doom. I can tell you that you see Bush/Cheney bumper stickers all over the place and that I don't know of a single person who is voting for Kerry.
