Thu, 09-30-2004 - 10:54pm
So, what did everybody think? This debate was my first (missed last yr's) and I enjoyed it. I liked how they were both respectful to each other and professional. No sighing, making facial expressions, slouching etc. I can't wait for the vp debates. :) XOXO.

Historically, the French have come to the aid of the US and supported them. The French had given up on Vietnam before the US became involved-- the US refused to allow Vietnam to have free and fair elections that had been mandated by the UN after Vietnam was split into North and South. Algeria was a French Province/colony and the French were unwilling to give it up. The French cut and run in the same manner the US historically has-- install a dictator by taking out a democratically elected leader and sitting back and watching.

You don't think that the slanderous accusations by the US of the French has anything to do with their unwillingness to join us in Iraq? The US forgets that the French have stood by and supported even our most foolish foreign policy decisions for years, yet this administration has consistently made fun of the French and accused them of betraying us.

Nope. I think they didnt want to help the US in catching the French with their hand in the proverbial cookie jar. It is useless however, as the UN will not do anything as a result of France and Russia breaking the resolutions and the embargo on Iraq.

I think the reverse is true with regards to Iraq. Hussein was not democratically elected, unless you count the one vote he allows to be counted as a democracy.

Actually, I think they will rejoice. Don't you realize that it's a fight they want? They want an America that's paranoid. They want to create scenes of mayhem for the press.

With Bush, they're getting everything they've ever dreamed of.

Well I woundn't go so far as saying that (it was most likely a factor but not the whole The oil for food issue was not their shining moment by any means.

Calling them the enemy however is going too far the other way. They have the potential of becomming a contributing ally like they have in the past. They would be very useful. They the consequences for the oil for food scandal but they should also be worked on with diplomacy.

Sadaam may not have come to power democratically, but he was not only considered an ally to the US during the Iraq/Iran war, but was also given WMDs by the US government.

We gave him WMD's?

I know we supported Iraq during the Iran / Iraq war, as it is necessary sometimes to choose between the lesser of two evils. It did not make him an ally as we were not directly involved in that conflict.

I see it the other way around.

They dont want to have to fight on their own soil, they would prefer to take the fight to America right here in the US.

The reason that the insurgents are putting up such a fight in Iraq is that they realize that this is basically a last stand fight to the death, as if democracy of any kind takes hold in Iraq, it is the toehold that is necessary to promote it throughout the region, and it will give the terrorist organizations one less country to seek haven in.

Yes, we gave Saddam WMD. That's how we "knew" he had them. Except it was so long ago, they were all degraded, this stuff doesn't have a long shelf life.
