Daily Endorsement Tally: Subject to Debate

NEW YORK Editorialists must be holding their breath, awaiting the end of the debate season, for Wednesday produced not a single newspaper endorsement for President Bush or Senator Kerry that we're aware of. With the final debate tonight, however, expect a rush of special pleadings for one candidate or the other in coming days.

There have been a few surprises so far -- and who knows what may transpire -- but we can expect a Bush surge soon, when traditionally Republican-leaning papers like the two Chicago dailies, New York Post, Boston Herald, The Washington Times, The San Diego Union-Tribune, The Columbus Dispatch, The Dallas Morning News, and Houston Chronicle all weigh in. Unfortunately for Bush, The Wall Street Journal never endorses candidates.

On the other hand, we'd be shocked if The Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, and The New York Times -- all of which have yet to endorse -- did not go for Kerry. We'd be tempted to add the Los Angeles Times to that list, but the paper told us this week it will stand by its policy of not endorsing for president.

However, that still leaves many interesting picks (if, indeed, they make a choice), topped by The Washington Post. Now that Colorado is a true battleground, where will the two Denver papers land? Only one, the Post, backed Bush in 2000.

Can Bush hold papers that liked him in 2000, like The Arizona Republic, the Los Angeles Daily News, The Hartford Courant, Orlando Sentinel, The Indianapolis Star, The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, St. Paul Pioneer Press, The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, The Providence Journal, and Austin American-Statesman?

And can Kerry hold on to Gore's friends at the San Francisco Chronicle, The Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News, The Miami Herald, St. Petersburg Times, The Des Moines Register, The Record in Bergen County, N.J., Newsday on Long Island, New York Daily News, The Buffalo News, The Blade in Toledo, and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette?
