One more reason not to vote for John McCain.
John wants to privatize social security. One way to ruin anything is to put it into the hands of private (for profit) agencies. Look at how great our insurance and health care system work in this country. A person either cannot afford health care or the agencies try not to pay out whenever a person gets sick. Imagine how good a John McCain Social Security program will work?
The present system would be financially sound if the Republicans and Democrats would have put that money aside only to have been used for social security benefits back when it first began. But by using the money that should have been there, they have put the program in peril. Bad as it is, it is fixable.
But to privatize the system would make it impotent and useless.

Yes...McCain, says that Social Security funding is an absolute disgrace:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-07-09-mccain-social-security_N.htm

(snip)

"Americans have got to understand that we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today," he said. "And that's a disgrace. It's an absolute disgrace, and it's got to be fixed."

Clearly, he wishes to either eradicate Social Security as we know it or he wants to allow privitization.

"One way to ruin anything is to put it into the hands of private"

Whatever do you mean. Just look at the Fannies that went fanny up today. LOL! That role used to be public before we started to privatize it in the 60s. And that's a pretty good run as huge private sector ventures go. Privatize Social Security and its toast by the time our kids grow up. Nice gift.

PS If McCain hates Social Security so much why does he keep cashing his SS checks? I guess as far as Republican hypocrisy goes these days, that's a pretty minor offense. In any other days, however, it's a disgrace. Shame on you McCain. You did some good things for our country and showed courage in a prison in Vietnam. Now you are ruining your legacy by becoming just another Bush.

""a program that has worked quite well for over 60 years. "

It has never worked well"

Hmm. Social Security was intended to address the abject poverty of the elderly in the Great Depression, which has not recurred to that extent since as a result. Social Security has proven a vital, reliable source of income and retirement planning for many of this nation's elderly. So maybe you are young? Maybe you are wealthy? Because if you are old and poor, you may well be dead without Social Security.

<"It is an insurance program, not an investment program."

Oh, you may want to read up on S.S. again since that statement is so untrue.

Agreed...I don't know of any eligible retirees who have NOT received the benefits that they earned as a result of their years of paying into the system.
