Is it working?

John McCain tells us that the so-called Surge of troops in Iraq is working? But is it? True, violence seems to be down, but what, if anything, has been accomplished? Ethnic cleansing in the neighborhoods of Baghdad. A division between the three principle groups - Kurds, Shiias, and Sunnies. The militias seem to biding their time and waiting to see what will happen with future elections. The Iraqi government seems to be divided still about all issues except for wanting our troops out of their country. Though hundreds of American troops are no dying every month, there is still a significant number of Americans who are being killed and injured because of road bombs and other insurgent incidents.
If the Surge has been as successful as John McCain says, then why do we still have 140,000-plus troops there? Why are we still spending $10 billion each month in Iraq?
The truth of the matter is the Surge has just maintained the status quo. Any day, the civic war could break out in full force again.
McCain says that we are winning? But, no one seems to be able to define what winning is in Iraq?
I believe that the military will do what ever is necessary to keep us there indefinitely. They may pull a few troops out to give us the idea that they are bringing troops home, but that will be only for the media cameras.
John McCain says that George Bush’s surge is working, but is it working???

Your man Obama said that the surge is working too.

"Your man Obama said that the surge is working too."
Nope. Obama said the escalation, along with other factors like the Anbar awakening, resulted in the present period of increased security in Iraq. Obama praised the troops, which is altogether fitting and proper. But, in a larger sense, Obama knows that we cannot declare this war won, we cannot declare victory, we cannot proclaim Mission Accomplished. Obama says we have not achieved our goal of political reconciliation in Iraq.
The way to pressure the Iraqis into governing themselves is not to send in an ever expanding army of babysitters. They need to see that its not swim or be thrown a life preserver, it's sink or swim. Iraqis also need to feel international pressure, not just pressure from a coalition of one whose military is spent.
The patience of Americans with Bush and McCain is astounding. Why are we in Iraq? Why are we there? What is the plan to leave? These are fundamental questions that Bush and McCain can't answer. Instead they point to a tactical victory on a road to nowhere.
Obama has stated his goal. We are out of there in 16 months. That is the goal. Action. Not another 5 years of the same.
It's time for real change. Not just lies and excuses.
