I don't find the question perplexing. Obama has indicated that Ayres was just this guy from the neighborhood that he didn't know very well. If Ayres held a fund raiser for Obama in his own home, then it would seem to indicate a different level of intimacy regarding the relationship.
Obama is doing the same thing regarding Rev. Wright. If you saw the interview with O'Reilly, Obama tried to pass of his relationship with Wright as "no big deal"...even "casual"...when his relationship with his "mentor" was clearly much, much more.
