General David Petraeus, BBC interview, September 11 2008:Q: Do you think you will ever use the word "victory"?
Petraeus: I don't know that I will. I think that all of us at different times have recognized the need for real restraint in our assessments, in our pronouncements, if you will. And we have tried to be very brutally honest and forthright in what we have provided to Congress, to the press, and to ourselves.

I thought that this was interesting, in itself, and in re: to McCain's comments, for ex:
... I'm confident that we will have victory in Iraq..

"Strategy for Victory in Iraq"

And also in re: to Palin's comments:
"This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word `victory' except when he's talking about his own campaign."
"Victory in Iraq is finally in sight ..."

((I think that all of us at different times have recognized the need for real restraint in our assessments, in our pronouncements, if you will. And we have tried to be very brutally honest and forthright in what we have provided to Congress, to the press, and to ourselves.))
Patreas is telling us that McCain doesn't want to listen even when he's told him that "victory" is not possible. Patreas needs to just say it- John doesn't understand that we aren't going to be "victorious" by his standards. But he must feel loyal or grateful to McCain.
Barack said that the POTUS sets the mission, and McCain's mission is way off base.
I agree, it is interesting.
Both McCain and Bush must be on edge after hearing Petraeus's comment so soon after all the hoopla about "The War Within."

Yes, certainly!
Also, I imagine it will be some time before Palin makes fun of Obama again for not using the word ``victory`` in re: to Iraq.
