What is there to be jealous of?? BTW... Moose are a lot bigger and slower then deer so they may be just a little bit easier to shot. I am not saying she isn't a good killer though ;)
>>"We have all now witnessed apparently sentient human beings, once provoked by a reporter's microphone, saying things like, "I'm voting for Sarah because she's a mom. She knows what it's like to be a mom." Such sentiments suggest an uncanny (and, one fears, especially American) detachment from the real problems of today."<<
There's a difference: being black, like being a woman, is a state of being that one is born with. While it's questionable whether either of those characteristics should be enough all on their own to garner votes, it's not at all questionable to point out the difference between both of them and "being a mom."
There are mothers all over the globe, since time immemorial. And without getting into the relative merits of motherhood, I would say that the commonplace nature of it - like fatherhood - means by definition that it's not a unique perspective or set of skills which necessarily adds any value to a candidate's resume for a job like Vice-President or - likely - President (should the Palin/McCain ticket be elected). And - while each person must ultimately choose for whom they'll cast their vote based upon their own assessment of what things are important to take into consideration, I'd say it's more than a little insipid to make such a statement, in a way that it's not to make a similar statement about a black or female candidate.
Lastly, other than the fact that I think it's simply inaccurate to attempt to draw a parallel between "black" and "mother" in that regard ("woman" would have been better, but then the author didn't SAY that, did he?), I have to wonder whether you read the entire article, or just the part I cut and pasted. Because it seems you glossed right over the real money quote, the most central point the author was making, which was that NOT that Palin should or should NOT be elected because "she's a mom," but because she "comes to us, seeking the second most important job in the world, without any intellectual training relevant to the challenges and responsibilities that await her. There is nothing to suggest that she even sees a role for careful analysis or a deep understanding of world events when it comes to deciding the fate of a nation."
Um....you can't really say that here. I almost never agree with anything snoopyme says, but if you want to refute one or more of her points, go for it. But a reply which contains nothing of substance for debate, but only an instance of name-calling, not only isn't debate, it's a violation of TOS.
Don't recall seeing you around here much, previously, so apologies if you already know what I just said. I just thought perhaps you were new-ish and not aware that's really sorta frowned upon. Also, heck, if I'm gonna complain when I see conservatives doing it (which I do), I have to be willing and able to recognize and disapprove of it even when people are disagreeing with someone I also disagree with.

Just FYI, and hope I didn't irritate you.
