ACORN commits fraud in Michigan
September 15
The pattern of ACORN’s voter-registration fraud continues in Michigan.  The Detroit Free Press reports that the Secretary of State has supplied evidence to the US Attorney’s office for potential prosecution after getting complaints from registrars about duplicate registrations and obviously made-up names on others, almost all from ACORN’s paid staff:

Several municipal clerks across the state are reporting fraudulent and duplicate voter registration applications, most of them from a nationwide community activist group working to help low- and moderate-income families.

The majority of the problem applications are coming from the group ACORN, Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has a large voter registration program among its many social service programs. ACORN’s Michigan branch, based in Detroit, has enrolled 200,000 voters statewide in recent months, mostly with the use of paid, part-time employees.

“There appears to be a sizeable number of duplicate and fraudulent applications,” said Kelly Chesney, spokeswoman for the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office. “And it appears to be widespread.”

The spokesman for ACORN says that they’ll “do an investigation”, but after dozens of complaints in several states — most of them battleground states in presidential elections — the pattern certainly has established itself.  Either the leadership of ACORN encourages fraud, or it hasn’t the competence to keep it from happening.  Given the convictions of some of its workers for fraud and the continuing instances of it, it doesn’t appear that ACORN has any desire to stop fraud, and indeed operates for the purpose of committing it.

The Department of Justice needs to open a RICO probe into ACORN.  The RICO statutes make the leaders of a criminal enterprise personally responsible for the crimes committed by its members.  If the DoJ can establish that ACORN management has encouraged fraudulent practices from the top down, that puts it within RICO territory.  The repetition of their fraud in multiple jurisdictions make it clear that it’s not just coincidence at work here.

Once again, this calls into question why Barack Obama pays ACORN for his GOTV efforts.  With criminal investigations underway in several states and now hopefully a federal investigation about to start, Obama shows extremely poor judgment in associating himself with such fraud — as well as paying $800,000 to fund it, unwittingly or not.  As President, he would have the responsibility for enforcing voter-fraud laws.  This doesn’t give much indication that he’d act to do so.  So much for being a reformer.

ACORN only exists to perpetrate welfare fraud and election manipulation. Everything else is sequential to those two directives. They have no redeeming social benefit in a constructive society. These people are past masters at voter fraud.  Barry Hussein’s friends in ACORN are busy stealing the election for him, and no one is supposed to notice.

What, again?

This same tired old trope was trotted out in 2004 and in 2000, as well, by Republicans who were desperately trying to suppress voter turnout....and literally almost zero evidence was found of any such thing, anywhere. And the few cases that WERE found were isolated ones of individual canvassers or petitioners filing silly names because they were getting paid per-registrant. Unless you think that "Daffy Duck" or similar - uh - creatures will actually show up and try to vote.

What WAS discovered, however, in pretty significant numbers, was massive and systematic attempts at voter SUPPRESSION in mostly minority and/or poor neighborhoods (which would presumably vote primarily Democratic), by GOP elections officials. Ken Blackwell ring any bells with anyone here? How 'bout Katherine Harris?

I was kind of thinking that it might at least be another month or so before the inevitable, hysterical GoOPer cries of "voter fraud" started up, but it seems like they're pulling all the stops out to keep that scary Muslim out of the White House this year.

Actually, a number of members of ACORN were convicted of voter fraud...

But of course, a systematic pattern across many states isn't ACORN's fault... I guess they just don't screen their employees well enough...

Have you ever worked with petitioners or those who register voters as a paid gig?

I have.

So I can pretty much tell you that it's almost certainly NOT a pattern, except insofar as it is a pattern amongst ALL such people who work that difficult, low-wage job: it lends itself to individual abuses of the system in the quest to get paid more, because payment is per-signature or per-registration. It's isn't ACORN's standard MO - or I would be surprised if it were, since that would immediately effectively end their organization's life, an organization which has been around for decades.

On the hand, you have things like the New Hampshire phone-jamming scandal, in which the actual New Hampshire GOP hired a professional firm to jam the phone lines of the Democratic party's GOTV effort during the 2002 congressional mid-terms. This little escapade was probably instrumental in clinching Sununu's close win over Jean Shaheen in New Hampshire, and for it, three people, including NRSC Northeast field director James Tobin, were convicted. All documented, no ambivalence or gray area about what went on. Planned, executed. Contrast that with the scattered charges against individual canvassers and petitioners. Other ACORN staff, in the same regions, at the same time, are not suspected, indicted or charged with anything.

Then there was the case in 2004 of the Nevada Republican party working in tandem with a group called "Voters Outreach of America," to systematically destroy Democratic registrations that it received, forwarding only Republican registrations on to the state registrar.

And, of course, Nathan Sproul, of Sproul and Associates - an Arizona company - hiring temp workers in many battleground states, and telling them to first screen people to see who they were voting for and only give registration cards to people who answered "Republican." Flatly illegal, of course, but this didn't stop Sproul and his cohorts from doing this in multiple states.

Anyway.....I forget what we were talking about. You were saying?
