What if things were reversed?

This is my first time posting on this board.  It seems like there are alot of very well-informed and passionate people here!  I look forward to hearing all your thoughts.

This was sent to me by a friend, and another ivillage friend suggested I share it here.  It certainly makes you think.

What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class? What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said "I do" to? What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard? What if Obama were a member of the "Keating 5"? What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

I will not participate in a conversation that uses that lie, lie, lie, propaganda, propaganda, propaganda.

What if John McCain had a record of voting "Present" in the Senate as opposed to actually taking a stand on the issues? What if Obama were a war hero? What if John McCain's spiritual advisor were a racist, anti-semitic loaded gun? What if Obama had a history of standing up against the party in power? What if

Come on enough is enough. What if Cindy McCains thesis from law school contained nothing but racial innuendos, what if John McCain was a member of a church with a radical preacher who pledged his allegiance to Africa not America....who's the racist.... Its time to focus on the issues though...this isn't getting us anywhere!

None of those things have anything to do with ones ability to run a country.

Be careful that you don't get sucked into seeing Obama as a capable politician for change simply because he is visually different than McCain. That is just as bad as seeing him as unqualified simply because of the color of his skin.

I'm not in danger of that.

I am not assuming anything about the motives behind your vote. I was using a general "you" as opposed to a more specific "you" in my reply. But, in the specific case, your post did seem to focus on Obama's race as a reason for people not voting for him, so it was natural to point out that the opposite can also be true.

The whole thing got me to wondering - how can McCain say he believes that Obama wasn't talking about Palin with the pig comment but still stand by his ad? It doesn't make sense to me.

Your post reminded me of a scene from "The Last of the Mohicans" when Daniel Day Lewis is talking to (I forget her name) and said that his

I could not agree with your post more. I pointed out the same thing in my reply and got a snippy post back, so it's lovely to see (and read) that there is another person out there who doesn't have their blinders on and is actually looking at the candidates' professional records.

((What if the roles were reversed and McCain was a 20-year member and close personal friend to a racist organisation with a racist leader? Being white, McCain would've been ran out on a rail decades ago)))

That's already the case. McCain IS a member of the GOP, you know. lol. How long has he been a member? What stance did the GOP take on flying the rebel flag? Weren't some of the quotes that Sarah read in her speech originally penned by known racists? And the dixie crats had their time as well. Okay.
