Fair enough. I'm with you. If they had endorsed a candidate explicitly, then I'd support going after them. Unfortunately, they can presently engage in political activities. Hopefully that will change one day. I think

The mormon church is not a typical church. None of their local clergy gets paid anything. It isn't their "job". Every position is a service, and they all have everyday jobs in addition to their position in the church. And the mormon prophet has never endorsed or condemned any candidate and the church disapproves handing out petitions, polls, or paraphanelia in the church. Some individual members might try once in awhile, but they are discouraged from doing so and the church does not support it. So in addition to the fact that every person is there as a volunteer, and not for personal gain, the mormon church is always the first organization on the scene at any natural disaster site, giving out food and supplies, helping to rebuild (including other churches by the way) and supporting the victims. Research any disaster anywhere in the world for the past ten or twenty years. They also provide food and clothing to those that need it in everyday life and help people get back on their feet, whether or not you are a member of thier church. There is not one other organized group, non-profit or church, that does more for the world. Taxing them would only hinder the help that they give people.

Well, would you agree that the tax breaks the Mormon church enjoys, as well as every other church http://www.subgenius.com/, allows them to send adherents around the world to proselytize. Why should I have to pay for that?

But your friend's father doesn't represent all clergy.

I'm sure your beliefs are commendable, but why should all Americans subsidize them?

I didn't ask you to subsidize my beliefs, but American has decided that the work non-profits do is worth a tax break.

It would be nice to pick and choose where our taxes go, wouldn't it.

But "I like this belief so they can be tax exempt" has some pretty serious first amendment problems.

I DO think it is worth consideration if ANY non-profit is providing its leadership with massive salaries and benefits -- but it isn't just churches that do this.

Actually, in the case of the mormon church, every one of their missionaries is responible for paying for their own mission. So you don't have to pay for it.
