Rose,

In order for ANY non-profit to engage in political activity it must create a PAC. All political activity must be funded by the taxable money in the PAC.

And political activity would include lobbying for legislation, urging individuals to vote a particular way on a candidate and/or ballot item, and urging individuals to write/contact legislators and government officials on a particular issue.

If Churches wish to engage in the activity that other non-profits must create PACs in order to do, then Churches should be bound by the same laws as other non- and not-for-profit organizations.

But EVERY non- and not-for-profit organization that wishes to engage in political activity must create a PAC to fund that activity. This is not true of Churches. That I feel is wrong and creates a special classification for religion.

I mistated. Dratted headache. I meant SHOULD.

I do not understand why a Church should be given a special classification over other non-profit organizations. If the Red Cross needs legislative change, it must ask its PAC to get involved. If AARP wants legislative change, it must get its PAC involved. But the Mormons and Catholics and Southern Baptists and

Wow I had no idea. My daughter has friends that are Mormons, they are very nice people and I am happy to see what good friends they have been for each other - never have to worry about what they are doing as they seem to have very good moral upbringing. I do find the religion a bit odd, but I had no idea how much good they do. Guess I'll be a little nicer the next time one knocks on my door.

We don't use plate money for political action in our church either.

Well perhaps we 'could' but look at the latest way we are spending money - bailing out AIG. I think I'd rather the churches helped those in the community - at least that was some actual good is being done for the average person.
