I want to add, again, that our church does a lot not only locally but globally to help those

What I'm saying is that our paying taxes does not pay for missions. Members pay for missions, not the general public. Because while your husband went to Japan and it would have cost him considerably more than 350, the kids that stay state-side wouldn't be charged that much (if that was how the church did it still, that's how it used to be) anyway, because they all pay the same amount, the extra from the cheaper missions balances out the more expensive missions.

I don't personally agree with same-sex marriage, and I don't believe in it, but I'm not going to tell someone that they're going to go to hell for what they believe either. They can believe what they want to believe.

If you lived in California where there is an initiative on the ballot which would change the State Constitution so that gay marriage went from being legal (as it is now) to illegal, how would you vote?

By the same token, it would take some burden off everyone else, because they wouldn't be paying the taxes the churches avoid.

If churches had to pay all taxes (e.g., real estate taxes, sales taxes, income taxes) on everything but their actual charitable works, we'd all have either lower taxes or less of a deficit.

Also, to the question someone asked earlier about "double taxation" - remember, the money you give to churches is deductible to you, therefore, it's not being double-taxed - right now, it's not being taxed at all.

That is not necessarily true - it assumes that any money the churches paid would stay in the treasury - or that it would offset spending elsewhere. How much would actually go into the treasury? There currently does not seem to be a link between what the federal government spends and how much we are taxed, considering the enormous debt we are currently holding, the tax cuts during the Bush administration, and the expensive wars we are currently involved in. I still don't understand what economist encourages a decrease in revenue (tax cut) and an increase in expenditures (expensive war) - seems like a recipe for disaster. But then I live on a strictly cash basis.

Sounds good, but what facts do you have to support the statement?

There's always the issue of whether the government has any fiscal discipline... but, if they're getting a dollar from a church, that's one less dollar they need to get from you or me.

Then it becomes our responsibility to make sure the government doesn't spend more than it gets by voting out the profligate congresscritters

Why is there a section on the tithing slip that says, "Missionary Fund" ? If people check the box ,and give to this fund, then missions are being paid/subsidizes for tax free. I think being honest is very important when talking about the church. Most people that dislike the church feel they way they do because we appear secretive, some of us
