Raising Taxes

I like to think about things on a conceptual, non-nit-picking level, only because I think it leads to better conclusions among those who engage in such a dialogue.
With that said, (and I also feel I have to disclose that I do not necessarily support McCain Nor Obama for president), I am interested to hear what people think about Obama's plan to raise taxes on the middle class.
I believe in cutting spending, keeping tax levels for the wealthy high, and empowering honest, working individuals to grow (financially, socially, personally, yada yada). To this end, I believe that it is simply ridiculous to propose raising taxes on the working middle class right now, given the circumstances surrounding the middle class, and I cannot understand why everyone doesn't agree with me.
I am really, really not looking for links to articles about how so-and-so did so-and-so at so-and-so time, I am only seeking opinions on a philosophical level about why raising taxes on the middle class, at this point in time, all things considered, would make sense to anyone.
Thanks :)
