Letterman on McCain: sad, funny and true

"After receiving a call from the McCain campaign canceling an appearance on tonight's Late Night with David Letterman, it was discovered that McCain stopped down the street to be interviewed by CBS' Katie Couric rather than rushing back to Washington to work on the proposed Wall Street bailout, as Letterman had been told.

"Hey Senator," Letterman mocked in front of live video of the interview, "can I give you a ride home?"

Letterman had earlier expressed suspicion at McCain's move to suspend his campaign. "This doesn't smell right," he said. "This isn't the way a tested hero behaves."

"I think someone's putting something in his Metamucil...He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second-string quarterback, Sarah Palin. Where is she?"

"What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough?" Letterman added. "Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!""

OK where to start:

McCain says Obama will raise taxes on electricity -Lie, he never said such a thing!

McCain says that Obama voted to raise income taxes on individuals earning "as little as $32,000 per year" -another LIE

McCain claims over & over that small business owners would pay a higher tax rate under Obama-LIE is Wrong again! - the vast majority would se no changes and MANY would get a tax cut - another McCain LIE

McCain claims Obama never held a single hearing on Afghanistan or that he has not been to Iraq in years-it was a Full Senate Foreign Relations Committee NOT Obama's Subcommittee & he (Obama) DID attend one meeting. At the same time McCain, who is ON the Armed Services Committee DID NOT attend any meetings! and he (Obama) was in Iraq in 2006. So, who is telling the truth?

Palin claims she said "no" to "The Bridge To NO Where" - a dubious LIE-she was all in favor for the bridge during her campaign for governor then gets in office and then she is AGAINST it. But does NOT return money to DC

Palin claims Alaska produces 20% of US domestic energy - NOT TRUE - Alaska's share of domestic energy production was 3.5%. And McCain keeps making the same falsehoods! So, who is telling the truth?

some quotes from McCain "the right to unionize is "class warfare"-1996

"I know NAFTA was a good idea, it created millions of jobs"-2008 (what jobs? what country?)

"I firmly object to buy America provisions" 2005 (congressional record 7/14/08)

And....

Voted to gut rail and transit workers' bargaining rights

led the fight to privatize Amtrak and supports privatizing mass transit-4/8/04-7/30/03-2/15/02-and Quote"despite legislation, Amtrak's future remains clouded"-11/17/97

endangered thousands of jobs by voting 9 times against funding for Amtrak and freight railroads-3/15/06-3/16/05-3/21/03-5/23/96-7/30/96-6/12/90-7/30/86-9/11/85

voted for Bush's 2006 Social Security privatization plan - 3/16/06 (and look at the private sector bankrupt!)

shall I go on??

Saying yes to a McCain-designed series of meetings or debates or whatever is neither an indication of Obama's unwillingness to debate McCain, nor is it particularly hard to understand,

Then why has Obama said he'd debate McCain anytime, anywhere?

This is such a non-issue. Why would a thinking self respecting politician appear on a comedy show when the nation is in an economic crisis. It makes much more sense for him to have appeared on a "news" show, no matter the low ratings.
