Letterman on McCain: sad, funny and true

"After receiving a call from the McCain campaign canceling an appearance on tonight's Late Night with David Letterman, it was discovered that McCain stopped down the street to be interviewed by CBS' Katie Couric rather than rushing back to Washington to work on the proposed Wall Street bailout, as Letterman had been told.

"Hey Senator," Letterman mocked in front of live video of the interview, "can I give you a ride home?"

Letterman had earlier expressed suspicion at McCain's move to suspend his campaign. "This doesn't smell right," he said. "This isn't the way a tested hero behaves."

"I think someone's putting something in his Metamucil...He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second-string quarterback, Sarah Palin. Where is she?"

"What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough?" Letterman added. "Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!""

I don't know a the # of times but these were not debates as such but townhall meeting formats.

I'm sure you're intentionally missing the point - but you can keep making this about Letterman if you want and it is still a matter of McCain and his desperation!

gm-marla is right, McCain wanted to do several town hall style debates across the country.

Even Bill agrees:

Maybe Obama could have gotten a rock band to be in town at the same time as the town hall debate to draw more people to make him feel more comfortable. LOL

"Interesting, McCain wasn't even in DC this morning while Congressional leaders were working out their "agreement in principle" as he was giving a speech at the Global Initiatives Forum."

Sounds

Your right, he didn't need tell him he would meet with Katie. But, I don't think McCain thought this all the way through (sounds familiar) considering Letterman would find out about McCains' preferred interview. This move by McCain only opened the way for some comedic whoop-ass. Comedian-hosts just love it when things like this fall in their lap. That's life in the mainstream.

"His campaign said he had to rush back".

His "Campaign" said nothing. McCain called him personally.

"but nobody knows what he already may have had scheduled before Letterman asked him including an interview with Couric"

Did you actually say this. You know what this means? If his people don't know his schedule, this is a serious communication problem. This would bring up doubts whither McCain knows how to run a campaign. Ouch!!!
