So, you want to look at total spending rather than viewing mandatory spending and discretionary spending separately. Does that mean you think that Medicare and Social Security, and Unemployment spending can be axed, even though every working citizen and employer pays insurance premiums on a regular basis to fund those programs? Do you think this nation can simply stop paying interest to the holders of our national debt instruments? There is a reason it is called MANDATORY--IT IS IF THE U.S. WANTS TO MAINTAIN ANY CREDIBILITY IN THE EYES OF ITS CITIZENS AND THE WORLD!
The original poster's pie chart is an accurate presentation of discretionary spending. Clearly, defense spending outweighs all other categories and that is what needs to be cut.

Try telling that to Jim Webb, a worthless Virginia Dem. who authored the $51 billion GI Bill
Mandatory spending is a much larger piece of the pie....focusing on the larger part makes more sense
So you don't believe those who put their lives on the line deserve help in the transition back to civilian life when they return? How can you argue against that type of spending?
The types of defense cuts I support are those that result from actions we take to reduce the number of recruits we need. Avoiding unnecessary wars such as the Iraq war, is an easy first step.

I didn't vote because my choice wasn't there. I think the very first place we should start cutting spending is the salaries of the Congress/Senate. And for every vote you miss or vote present they should be fined! When did missing votes and/or just not voting become ok? Both sides do this and it is one of those things that has made me truly feel that there is no hope for the current batch. They should all step down and we can start over! It has always amazed me how they continuously vote themselves raises, and how we just keep allowing this to happen!

The Iraq war is costing around $140 billion a year and that's not even in the defense budget. The Iraq and Afghanistan war dollars are appropriations.

You can see that mandatory spending is $1.8 trillion and discretionary is $1.1 million. Look at the line items in the mandatory category, think of what's deducted from your paycheck to pay for them and then tell me that you want to cut that spending so that you cannot receive SS and medicare benefits some day and that you don't want to receive unemployment comp if you lose your job.
The biggest increase in the mandatory line items is interest on national debt, and that spending that will decrease if we stop throwing all our money into unnecessary wars.

back, on the contrary, there's plenty of private research going on.
I'd turn the same spotlight on the defense budget as well - thanks for the reminder - there's plenty of waste and fraud there as well!
janet, you'll note I didn't cut social security, and with regard to medicare, I said find the fraud, of which there is plenty.
If I could I would cut out the whole breakfast and lunch programs at schools.
