< Government was responsible for the failures...as was personal irresponsibility

>>> No business responsiblity here? Only government and homeowners? Wow. I'm pretty sure I'd argue that all had some role in this,

Yep...but many of the businesses were pushed into making the bad loans via legislation like the Community Reinvestment Act and pressure from the government. Obama, in fact, was brought in to "teach" Acorn coercive techniques to push for sub-prime loans.

>>> and government to the extent of a)deregulation b) tax cuts c) wild spending d) the war.

Sorry...no...and it was government "regulation" (mentioned above) and pressure on businesses, as well as deregulation allowing cheap loans that caused the failure, not tax cuts or spending (Obama wants to spend more) or the war. In fact, both Bush and McCain sought greater regulation over lending practices but were rebuffed by the Dems.

>>> Three of the four fall largely on the right.

Sorry...no again. The policies that lead to the failure were instituted by the Dems and protected by the Dems in spite of Republican attempts to seek regulation.

< Defense is for the common good, but it isn't socialist. The enlistment is voluntary and the spending comes from a common fund...tax payers are paying for goods and services.

>>> Actually, it is. You are picking and choosing what you will attach the label to.

Actually, it isn't...unless you want to try and apply an erroneous label.

>>> Yes only a true "patriot" capitalist and keyboard commando can say with a straight face that service to our country is tantamount to "goods and services." Tell that to the families of the 4000+...

LOL! Wow, I guess yer sher raht, there. Thank them folks for servin' fer free and tossin' in them tanks 'n stuff et no addishunal charge. We sher appresheeate it. (geeze...where's my "eye roll" icon when I need it? So many moronic liberal comments escape punctuation)

I'm sure if I drank enough kool-aid I might be able to see the connection between your rather obtuse comment and the actual discussion that was taking place. But since you mentioned it...dang! if those Canucks are helpin' out like that we should send them a thank-you card for making our rides look so spiffy.

Wel, you see his birth father was a MUSLIM and that makes him a MUSLIM too and ISLAMOFASCISM is on the rise so that clearly makes him a FASCIST, except he is also a COMMUNIST, but you know the way they worshipped Stalin is very similar to the way they worshipped HITLER, and Stalin was a communist just like Obama, so OBAMA IS A NAZI! See? Easy-peasy.

>>> I see... so the bad business decisions and risk taking and the bundling was not because business saw the potential of huge profits, it was because the government made them do it?

Sure there were profits...but yes, the government made them do it. Do you actually imagine that "business" got together over lunch one day and said, "hey, I have an idea...let's make fiscally unsound loans!"

>>> As for socialism, it exists any time we pool resources for the common good under the auspices of government. Is our military private?

Socialism is the "social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society." The military would be an organization created to protect that society. For the taxpayer, it's good and services paid for with tax dollars...with some paying more.
