I think most teachers are trying to do what they dreamed in teaching. Don't get me wrong I think we should be paid more - but I don't think that solves the problem. Maybe it would help recruit and retain teachers. But the problem is more with administrators. For example my school is in a poor county with a diverse population. We have made AYP every year but our administrator just keeps piling endless meetings on us and additional out of classroom responsibilities. Then they want to add new programs that take time out of instruction. We are spread so thin with non-teaching responsibilities that our planning time - the time to plan what we will teach, how we will teach it, and grade papers - is severely reduced. This does have a negative impact on the classroom unless you have nothing else to do when you get home - but amazingly most of us do have a life outside of school! Then the professional development we have to attend is often not relevant to the classroom. We spent two years with reading strategies - great if you teach a subject that requires reading but there just isn't that much reading in math. Besides the fact that I did teach reading at one time and the 'strategies' we were being 'taught' but this overpaid consultant were basic Education 101 strategies that were no brainers. What a huge waste of time and money. The fact that we have made AYP under our current principal is a testament to the teachers dedication at our school - working within his ridiculous policies!
Hogwash. McCain HAD NOTES, he had intention of putting in that line about receiving the bracelet from the soldier. McCain doesn't fool me for a minute.
