Early Poll Results Suggest More Uncommitted Voters Saw Obama As Debate Winner
Posted by Brian Montopoli| Comments47

CBS News and Knowledge Networks conducted a nationally representative poll of approximately 500 uncommitted voters reacting to the debate in the minutes after it happened.

These figures are still preliminary and could change as more respondents complete the survey. But here's what we have so far:

Forty percent of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Barack Obama was the winner. Twenty-two percent thought John McCain won. Thirty-eight percent saw it as a draw.

Forty-six percent of uncommitted voters said their opinion of Obama got better tonight.

Sixty-eight percent of uncommitted voters think Obama would make the right decisions about the economy. Forty-one percent think McCain would.

Forty-nine percent of these voters think Obama would make the right decisions about Iraq. Fifty-five percent think McCain would.

We will have a full report on the poll later on. Uncommitted voters are those who don't yet know who they will vote for, or who have chosen a candidate but may still change their minds.

And so do those who voted on MSNBC:

I just saw that site - pretty bad when the topic that McCain was supposed to be better than Obama and he gets a lower grade - especially with his 26 years of experience. Makes me wonder - if Obama can do better with less experience just how much better he will be over time?

As for my own take... the debate was pretty even.

i found an article that says it was a draw:
http://www.slate.com/id/2200924/

and one from newsweek that says mccain won:
http://www.blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/09/26/mccain-won-but-will-it-matter.aspx

i'm sure if i look elsewhere i will find one that says obama won too...tough call, i'm with you, the small portion i saw before it bored me to sleep, even though i'm not an obama fan, he is quite an eloquent speaker and i can see why people are drawn to him, i felt it was a draw.

Well I can say that I have always been supremely embarrassed at Bush's inability to appear intelligent when speaking - so I guess public speaking skills rank pretty high with me. I am similarly concerned by Palin's lack of skill in this area. She can pronounce most words but there is very little substance in what she does say. Sounds eerily reminiscent of Miss South Carolina most of the time, unless she is just being snarky. So makes me wonder if all she is really capable of is 10 second bursts of coherence.

of course FOX is going to say McCain won the debate. I could have told you that before it even happened. Personally, i thought it was a pretty uneventful debate and kind of predictable. on both sides.

I agree but I really think that when people watched debates or interviews, their perception of the performance is colored by what they already believed about the candidate. I don't know how else to account for all the posts about how well people think Sarah Palin has done in her interviews which seemed embarrassingly awful to me. I do want a president that appears intelligent though - I was turned of by Bush the first time I heard him speak and probably the only way he could have won me over after that was to keep his mouth shut - LOL.

I don't mind her gung-ho-ness in theory - but there needs to be some intellect behind it otherwise what is guided your decision to be gung ho? How do you decide which issues to be gung ho about and when to hold back if you don't take time to consider the options. Seems we have already followed one gung ho leader off a cliff - it's time to look before we leap now. Lately McCain/Palin seem to be putting more emphasis on being 'mavericks' and less emphasis on thinking things through before acting - like his 'rush' to DC although it took nearly 24 hours for him to get there from New York - and it is only about a 3 hour drive! Or the 'suspension' of his campaign until the crisis was dealt with - but then leaves with less consensus than was achieved before his arrival. Time to think things through - we have no more wiggle room for impulsive mistakes.
