Is there anything for the citizens who don't want to become socialists to do.  What should I be doing? I don't want our country on that path and it seems it is.

Thanks for posting the excerpts and link to the NY Times article. Cox & the SEC screwed up big time, and I agree that Paulson was a part of it all.

Before reading the article, I assumed that the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Stegall Act was the primary reason for the current crisis. While it certainly contributed to it, we know that the repeal of Glass-Stegall was only part of the problem, and probably the smaller part when compared to the SEC's negligence.

Oh, they are not going to go out there and tell you that the more of your paycheck they get, the better because they know how to spend it better than you. They just talk about all their new programs and spending, which can only be funded by huge tax increases.

If you go to the Obama web site, you see things like "Amend the North American Free Trade Agreement" (raise taxes and prices), "End Tax Breaks for Companies that Send Jobs Overseas" (raise taxes and prices), "reward companies that create good jobs with good benefits for American workers" (increase spending and raise prices) etc... They are telling us right on their web site that they want to raise taxes and grow government all over the place.

Please explain how 'amend NAFTA' means increase taxes? Please explain how 'reward companies that create good jobs with good benefits' means increase taxes?

Since you choose to think anything they say means increase taxes maybe you can tell me how McCain's 'promises' don't mean increase taxes?

I was wondering the same thing. Prices may increase on North American imports, but that's due to the US dollar devaluation.

There were a few other factors to consider that kept the depression going. At the end of 1931, Hoover and Congress approved a huge tax increase in an attempt to balance the budget. Of course, this was a terrible decision and prevented any recovery from happening.

Then Roosevelt decided that the government needed to regulate production. They decided they needed to reduce production and raise prices and wages. Huh? Yep. Production was already reduced due to the depression, and they somehow thought that they should help the economy recover by further reductions in production. Ouch!

Taxes on business, labor unions, and uncertanty as to what the government would do next were all factors that kept the depression going. Government intervention and over regulation on business helped the depression continue along.

Consumers were able to start buying again when business was freed up from luney government controls that stopped them from being able to meet market demand.

By amending NAFTA he wants to increase barriers to free trade. Higher taxes, higher prices.

Reward companies that create good jobs with good benefits for American workers. The carrot will be some kind of government spending, and since these jobs are being done with more expensive labor, prices will increase.

Why doesn't he just cut the tax rate on corporations if he doesn't want them to ship jobs overseas? Taxes are cheaper over there.

In the clip I heard a few days ago, that was exactly what he was proposing, keeping nice tax breaks for corporations that keep jobs in the US, but not rewarding companies that ship jobs overseas by giving them tax breaks. What is the big problem?
