Actually, I'll wager that very few of those mega-churches are getting their money from the wealthy.

I think you mean redistribution through the tax code. Yes, i do believe it's the right thing to do with a progressive tax code.

We have a progressive tax code.

What if my work helps a million other people get rich - am I entitled to the fees they willingly paid me? Where is the point at which I'm no longer just good at what I do and am a greedy $%^&$%$!! ?

At the point when you run take people's money but give them no return.

Unfortunately too many wealthy Americans make their largest charitable contributions to their alma maters or their churches. If that money were, in turn, being used to help those most in need, we would have a much better nation with fewer going hungry and fewer homeless.

You don't think churches or universities help feed the hungry, house the homeless, or provide the knowledge and inspiration to future leaders who will find new ways to feed and clothe thise who need food and clothes?

Instead we have mega-evangelical churches spending millions to broadcast their propaganda on television, and private colleges using the incoming donations to further their political agenda or provide scholarships for the kids of the donors.

Glad you're not cynical! Otherwise you might throw the baby out with the bathwater!

Just out of curiosity, how many of your favorite charities are run or staffed by people who are religious and/or educated?

I know it's already progressive, but McCain wants to make it more regressive.

Well, I wouldn't go back to the 90% top marginal tax rate of the 1950's and early 1960's, but I think a top rate of 60% on incomes over $1,000,000 is about right, rather than the 35% that it is now.

Glad to hear it!!

but McCain wants to make it more regressive.

To the best of my knowledge, McCain wants to leave the basic tax structure as it is - which has the top 5% paying over 50% of the taxes. The cuts he's proposed are across the board, and would still have the top earners

I think our nation has made great strides over the past 100 years and if some wealth redistribution is necessary, then so be it.

Yes, if you're referring to progressive (income) taxation.

On this thread you have been asked to define what you mean by "wealth distribution." I have a more basic question.

How do you define wealth?
