"Socialism isn’t necessarily about ownership, it’s about control.

I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall, mostly because Americans have been conditioned to believe that anything and everything different from what they want is communism.

Not to mention the fact that too many Americans will knee jerk label any and every thing they either don't agree with or don't understand as socialist, communist or leftist as a way of shouting down disagreement.

`When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

`The question is,' said Alice, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

`The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, `which is to be master -- that's all.'

Well, first of all, I guess the guy who runs discoverthenetworks.org ought to know about marxists:

"David Joel Horowitz (born January 10, 1939) is an American conservative writer and activist. The son of two life-long members of the Communist Party and once a supporter of Marxism as well as a member of the New Left in the 1960s, Horowitz later renounced his "left-wing political radicalism" and became an advocate for conservatism. He is a founder of the David Horowitz Freedom Center (formerly the Center for the Study of Popular Culture), and has served as president of that organization for many years. He is the editor of the conservative website FrontPage Magazine, and his writings can also be read on news sites and publications, including the conservative magazine NewsMax. He founded the activist group Students for Academic Freedom and is affiliated with Campus Watch. He occasionally appears on Fox News Channel."

This is the page for the New Party back then http://web.archive.org/web/19970709035015/www.newparty.org/index.html

Here is their platform: http://web.archive.org/web/19970709034549/www.newparty.org/about_the_np.html An excerpt:

"Our commitment to democracy comes from our recognition of the moral equality of persons. People really are created equal, and their free deliberation is the best hope for achieving the blessings of liberty. The same recognition fuels our commitment to fairness in social life -- not letting such moral irrelevancies as race, gender, age, sexual orientation, country of origin, or inheritance determine one's life chances. A commitment to democracy, finally, implies commitment to building the popular democratic organizations -- clean, effective, and accountable government, democratic unions and community organizations -- necessary to any democratic society. "

I am hard pressed to see the marxist conspiracy, so maybe Horowitz is mainly seeing the ghosts of his childhood.

That, btw, is the first fact about Obama that is worrisome to me. Few books male a million bucks in profit and lucrative book deals for politicians are suspect.

In your experience as a Small business owner, would you think that there are many small businesses that actually employ people and make less then 250,000 a year. How many, well paid, people could possible work for a company that makes that amount of money? IOW,

>>> I've lived on a kibbutz in Israel, which is a "socialist" society, and it was actually quite pleasant. Everybody shared in the profits and lifestyle generated by the cooperative.

If it was so great, why didn't you stay?

OK, that's possible. However the last time I checked the nation of Israel hadn't turned itself into a great big kibbutz, so I'd venture to say plenty of Israelis were less than enthralled.
