Conservative pundit says Palin represents 'fatal cancer' to GOP Buzz up!

The liberal Huffington Post reports that David Brooks, a PBS commentator and conservative columnist for the New York Times, said today that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's scorn for ideas "represents a fatal cancer" to her party.

Here's the account of Brooks' comments, made in an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg.

Brooks said Palin has a troubling anti-intellectual attitude. "Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices," Brooks said.

Brooks said Palin is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president, but had praise for nominees John McCain and Barack Obama. The Huffington Post quotes him as saying he has been "dazzled" by some of his interactions with Obama, a Democrat.

I realize people will discount this because The Huffington Post interviewed him, I saw this article in USA Today online. This is the underlying issue I have with Sarah Palin, that David Brooks articulates so well. I really wish McCain had made a better pick of a running mate - this pick makes me question his judgment. I am having a very difficult time getting past it.

I wanted Romney also, of course since I hail from Boston originally, with many family members still on Beacon Hill, he was my second choice as a presidential candidate from the start so that would have been my ideal ticket. I just long for the good old republican days of Ronald Reagan and yes George HW. Not sure I can even go with Independent, I don't think my family has ever had an independent, with the exception of my brothers ex wife - LOL. Maybe things will improve if McCain loses, maybe there will be a realization that the Palin play didn't work, or maybe it's time to get out of DC and head back to Boston.

There is, to my knowledge, no term limitations on vice presidents, so don't worry. If McCain dies, Palin can just ask Cheney to be vice president again.

You know the anti-Vietnam aspect might be exactly the problem with McCain, he does seem to still be fighting that demon. It seems to color his world these days, not something I had ever noticed before.

Well as David Brooks is a conservative I don't think liberal viewpoint matters. The thrust of the article was his opposition to Sarah Palin. As a conservative that concerns me and I don't think I am alone. I would think in this case the liberals would be thrilled. It's the conservatives that might have the problem but we liked him when he was for McCain so do we just switch now?
