Campbell Brown Blasts McCain Campaign For "Race Baiting"

October 8, 2008 11:13 PM

In her "No Bias, No Bull" segment Wednesday night, Campbell Brown pleaded with the McCain campaign to stop what she referred to as "race baiting."

"It is getting very, very ugly," Brown said. "Tonight, we are cutting through the bull on the issue of race and this campaign."

Brown blasted McCain surrogates for injecting race Obama's race into the campaign narrative by invoking his middle name or referring to him as a terrorist, and she called on McCain to deliver a "much stronger denunciation than a campaign-generated paper statement":

Look, everybody, we all know that we are in unchartered territory here. Never before has there been an African-American presidential nominee. So without question, race is going to be part of the conversation. Race baiting doesn't have to be. And yet, it is happening in this campaign.

Twice this week, surrogates for Senator McCain had made a point of calling Senator Obama "Barack Hussein Obama." The implication here is clear. It's foreign sounding. It's Muslim sounding. It's un-American sounding. It's dangerous sounding.

What it is, is race baiting. And that is what is dangerous. Inciting crowds, encouraging their angry outbursts. McCain supporters shouting "treason" and "terrorist" about Obama at these rallies — that is dangerous.

Earlier in the campaign, McCain denounced this stuff. He strongly denounced it. And today, it requires a stronger response, a much stronger denunciation than a campaign-generated paper statement.

>>How many times has the Huffington Post called George Bush GEORGE W BUSH? What is the difference?

Really? You can't be that obtuse. Everyone calls the current President Bush, George W. Bush to distinguish him from his father. Do you know another Barack Obama. Are you confused and need to have his middle name included so you don't confuse him with someone else?

I find the defenses of McCain and Palin's current tack to be entirely disingenuous. Individuals here may not be racist or may not consider Obama to be a terrorist or may know darn well that he's not Muslim. But it's clear that plenty of other McCain supporters are more gullible and less honorable. I've seen the videos of McCain supporters outside rallies. (They're linked in another thread, so I'm not going to include them here.) I'm disgusted and sick by this behavior. And yes, I hold McCain and Palin responsible. At the very least, they have the power to stop it. The fact that they're saying next to nothing says a great deal to me about their motivations.

No one needs to distinguish him from his father.

((The media is in cahoots with Obama...either that, or they've just coincidentally got the same racist mindset.))

Right. So, the MSM is "outing" their own racist agenda? lol. McCain is going down like a coward by lying about Obama behind his back and smiling in his face. What kind of "man" does that?

Not to mention, Bush43 lied about NcCain in 2000 and 2004 and he said there is a special place in hell for people like that (or something or other). lol. Why doesn't anyone think that it is dishonorable for McCain to adopt the same lie machine that they used against him? McCain spoke out AGAINST those Rovian tactics and NOW McCain is FOR those Rovian tactics? If THAT isn't erratic, then Alaska's not a cold state.

((Seems to me that the only one injecting race here is the Obama camp, and his liberal media.))

The media covered it as racist, not the Obama camp. And you really lost me at "his" liberal media. lol. Who's liberal media? Obama's? How hilarious that the radical right seem to blame Obama for everything under the sun. lol. That's SNL material for sure. lol. When has the media ever been overtly liberal? Maybe a commentator here and there, but McCain was their baby until he turned on them first. Big Mistake on McCain's part. Again.

((The one silver lining: every fear tactic, code word, wink and nod is recorded. When this election is over, there will be a record. Every time the average, thinking American has seen blatant injustice they have largely rejected it. You can feel the disgust spreading. I am starting to notice republican friends who are getting turned off. We are above this and we deserve better.))

This is news to my ears. I know it's not the whole GOP, just the radicals, but it's hard to tell the difference from the reports in the media. To all of the GOP that have the sensibility to know that lying about a respected US Senator like Obama, shows how little McCain knows about the economy and what direction to take America, thank you for not condoning the McCain camp's embarrassing display of fear, desperation, and contempt.

First let's start with who is a radical right?

Seriously, is YouTube your main source of information? Just curious. I can't be the only one who finds these links to other sites tiring.

It is very sad that in this day and age, race is still an issue. I have participated in phone banks into battleground states. Some of the voter responses have been very disturbing. One guy said "I will never vote for that "N" and another said, "if he wins he will get a bullet."

I would understand if voters did not want to support Senator Obama because they thought he was not the best person for the job or did not like his plan or position on various issues. But, to say they would not vote for him because of the color of his skin or threaten his life because of it, is very disheartening.
